COMPAQ LOWERS PRICES, STEPS UP DRIVE TO BOOST MARKET SHARE; AGGRESSIVE
PRICING, NEW DESKTOP AND NOTEBOOK MODELS DELIVER GREATER VALUE
HOUSTON, Oct. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE: CPQ) today lowered prices on several of its popular desktop and notebook personal computers in line with its strategy to provide higher value to its customers and increase market share. The move is timed with increases in parts availability and record product shipments from Compaq factories.
Suggested list prices (SLPs) were lowered on selected models of the COMPAQ ProLinea, COMPAQ DESKPRO/i, COMPAQ Contura 3/20 and 3/25, COMPAQ LTE Lite/25c and COMPAQ Portable 486 and 486c PCs.
"Continued increases in operating efficiencies, parts availability and manufacturing output have converged to where we can deliver even greater value to our customers," said Ross Cooley, Compaq Senior Vice President, North America. "In September alone, Compaq shipped more than 200,000 units from our factories worldwide. Our worldwide manufacturing muscle is a formidable weapon which we will continue to use against the competition, in addition to the strength of Compaq's brand name, the quality of COMPAQ products and the excellence of Compaq customer service and support.
"This action is another example of our resolve to remain an aggressive cost leader, coupled with PC technology and customer support leadership," added Cooley.
The price of the entry level 386-based COMPAQ ProLinea Model 40 is now under $800 (a). A fully configured 486-based ProLinea Model 120 (preinstalled with Microsoft Windows 3.1) starts at $1,259. The entry level 386-based COMPAQ Contura notebook lists for under $1,500. The COMPAQ LTE Lite/25c, at less than $3,500, is now the most aggressively priced 386-based active matrix color notebook PC in its class.
In conjunction with lowering SLPs, Compaq said it has readjusted its pricing structure by reducing reseller discounts on the selected desktop and notebook PCs, so that these SLPs will more realistically reflect what customers could expect to pay.
Based on customer demand, Compaq also introduced several new COMPAQ ProLinea models preinstalled with MS-DOS 5.0, Microsoft Windows 3.1 and a mouse, that are priced lower than previous DOS-only models. Compaq enhanced the COMPAQ DESKPRO/i family by introducing models with larger capacity 120-megabyte and 240-megabyte hard drives. These new models include DOS 5.0, Windows 3.1 and a mouse, and some are priced lower than DOS-only models.
Aimed at individual customers, the company introduced new models of the COMPAQ ProLinea, preinstalled with Windows 3.1, a 2400-baud FAX modem and Prodigy software. New models of the COMPAQ Contura were also announced that offer larger hard drives (84- and 120-megabyte), and come preinstalled with DOS, Windows 3.1, PFS:WindowWorks and a Compaq Trackball.
In a related move, Compaq today also announced the availability of two very aggressively priced 14-inch color monitors. The new COMPAQ SVGA Color Monitor provides increased performance over video graphics color monitors.
The new COMPAQ VGA Color Monitor is an extremely cost effective solution for the most price-sensitive customers.
