COMPAQ LAUNCHES SECOND DECADE OF PC LEADERSHIP
WITH NEW WORLD-CLASS NOTEBOOKS, PORTABLE PCs
HOUSTON, Nov. 9 /PRNewswire/ -- Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE: CPQ) today launched its second decade of portable technology and market leadership with a PC product blitz that includes several new aggressively priced world-class notebook and portable PC products. Exactly ten years ago this week, Compaq established the portable PC marketplace when it introduced the world's first industry-standard portable PC.
Today Compaq announced the COMPAQ LTE Lite 4/25C, the world's first active matrix color notebook PC based on the new Intel 486SL microprocessor; the COMPAQ LTE Lite/25E, the first notebook to feature a bright, active matrix black and white VGA display; and 66-MHz 486DX2 models of the COMPAQ PORTABLE 486, now the world's fastest portable PC.
Compaq also announced the new COMPAQ SpeedPAQ 144 Modem (see separate release), the industry's first internal, high-speed modem to combine high performance data and fax transmission with a Cellular Direct Connection feature.
"Since the introduction of the first COMPAQ Portable a decade ago, our engineering, technology and manufacturing strengths have enabled us to grow from a mere start-up portable PC manufacturer to a Fortune 200 computer powerhouse," said Eckhard Pfeiffer, President and CEO, Compaq Computer Corporation.

"Today we strike an exclamation point on a record-setting product introduction year for Compaq. Since January, we have brought to market more than 100 new products, including high quality notebooks, desktops, PC servers and network printers. Combined with aggressive pricing and backed by CompaqCare comprehensive customer service and support, we are well positioned to go the distance in meeting customer needs," Pfeiffer said. COMPAQ LTE Lite 4/25C: Active Matrix Color Display; Processor Upgradeable
As one of the newest members of the award-winning COMPAQ LTE Lite family, the COMPAQ LTE Lite 4/25C features Intel's new 25-MHz 486SL microprocessor that includes an integrated numeric coprocessor and 8- Kbyte cache. The small (8.5" x 11" x 2") and lightweight (6.5 pounds) notebook PC provides performance similar to 486DX systems, and is up to 100 percent faster than 386SL-based products. Customers also have the ability to upgrade the new notebook PC to faster 486SL-based microprocessors when they become available from Intel.
All models come standard with a brilliant active matrix color VGA display, an integrated EasyPoint trackball, 4 megabytes of RAM, battery life of 2 to 3 hours on a single charge, desktop expansion capability and extensive security features. In addition, all models come preinstalled with MS-DOS 5.0 and Microsoft Windows 3.1, and include one- year on-site service at no extra charge.
The COMPAQ LTE Lite 4/25C Model 120/w ($4,099) comes standard with a 120-megabyte hard drive; and the COMPAQ LTE Lite 4/25C Model 209/w ($4,399) comes standard with a high capacity 209-megabyte hard drive. While both models are shipping today worldwide, volume shipments will begin later this year. COMPAQ LTE Lite/25E: World's best Black and White Display
Based on customer demand, Compaq designed the new COMPAQ LTE Lite/25E with an exclusive active matrix black and white VGA display (640 x 480) that is up to three times brighter than other competitive passive matrix-based monochrome notebook PCs.
As another new edition to the LTE Lite family, the COMPAQ LTE Lite/25E features the COMPAQ UltraView display (9.5-inch diagonally), which represents a new generation in display technology. With its integrated Easypoint trackball, high performance and screen clarity, the new UltraView display is simply unmatched. The COMPAQ LTE Lite/25E is both display and processor upgradeable. Customers can upgrade the new active matrix black and white VGA display to an active matrix color panel, and the 386SL microprocessor can be upgraded to Intel 486SL chips.
All models come standard with 4 megabytes of RAM, battery life of 3- 4 hours on a single charge, MS-DOS 5.0 and Microsoft Windows 3.1 preinstalled, and one-year on-site service at no extra charge. The COMPAQ LTE Lite/25E Model 84/w, with an 84-megabyte hard drive, lists for $2,999; the COMPAQ LTE Lite/25E Model 120/w, with a 120-megabyte hard drive, lists for $3,199.
