COMPAQ LAUNCHES HIGH-PERFORMANCE PCS, PC SYSTEMS IN JAPAN

COMPAQ LAUNCHES HIGH-PERFORMANCE PCS, PC SYSTEMS IN JAPAN
TOKYO, March 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE: CPQ) and its wholly owned Japanese subsidiary, Compaq K.K., today introduced a broad range of desktop, portable and notebook computers and PC systems designed exclusively for the Japanese market. The announcements were made today at a press conference here.
Continuing its worldwide leadership role in promoting open industry standards, COMPAQ products designed for the Japanese market will support Windows Version 3, as well as MS DOS, the industry's two most popular PC operating systems. With these new COMPAQ products, which incorporate the internationally recognized Industry Standard Architecture (ISA) and the Extended Industry Standard Architecture (EISA), Japanese users for the first time can switch from the United States to Japanese mode, and vice versa, using a simple command. These established open standards offered on COMPAQ products provide Japanese users first-time worldwide networking opportunities from literally anywhere in the world.
Another first for the Japanese market, and a distinguishing characteristic of Compaq's new Japanese products, is the ability to run English applications while operating in Japanese mode without modification. Users can remain in the Japanese mode using Japanese language characters while operating English software applications. Compaq also introduced today its three-mode drive support, a 3.5-inch drive that can read the 720-kilobyte and 1.44-megabyte (MB) diskettes commonly used in the U.S., as well as the 1.23-megabyte diskettes used by more than 60 percent of Japanese PC users. This unique Compaq feature enables COMPAQ products to automatically detect and read the most commonly used Japanese formatted diskettes. Users no longer need to predefine the type of diskette being used, but simply insert the diskette to begin the application.
Compaq also introduced an aggressive multi-faceted service and support program designed exclusively for the Japanese market. Maintenance and warranty service will be provided by Compaq's full service dealers and two Japanese third-party service providers covering all of Japan.
"Compaq has diligently researched and studied the Japanese market over the past three years. We understand what the critical success factors are, and we are fully prepared to back up our products with a solid management team," said Eckhard Pfeiffer, president and chief executive officer, Compaq Computer Corp. "In addition, we bring to Japan our strong corporate commitment of providing technology-rich quality products, financial strength, market knowledge and first-rate service and support programs."
"Compaq K.K. will bring to Japan a new age in information technology," said Masaru Murai, president of Tokyo-based Compaq K.K. "We will offer innovative opportunities in computer networking, in worldwide compatibility, and in service and support by providing our customers with the foremost computer efficiencies for the growth of their businesses worldwide."
According to Murai, Compaq, which ranks as the fourth-largest PC manufacturer in the world, has designed products for Japan and for markets throughout the world based on a seven-point conceptual model: compatibility, quality, reliability, modularity, portability, versatility, and network management.
 SERVICE PROGRAMS AND PROVIDERS
Compaq announced today the formation of a broad service and support strategy which involves its dealers and two third-party service companies.
Compaq has established a network of 27 dealers throughout Japan who are authorized as service and support providers for all Compaq customers throughout the country.
Compaq also announced the formation of long-term service and support relationships with two of Japan's most preeminent third-party services providers. CSK Corporation and Uchida Esco have signed multi-year agreements to provide Compaq customers with on-site service and product support throughout Japan.
"We set stringent criteria for the selection of our service and support providers, carefully reviewing the reputations and the philosophies of each of the companies we interviewed," said Murai. "Both CSK and Uchida Esco were selected based upon their excellent records and because they each share Compaq's values for providing customers the best and most flexible service options."
With a combined staff of more than 465 engineers located in 73 service offices, CSK and Uchida Esco offer Compaq customers on-site service, same-day spare-parts delivery for desktop and systems products, and worldwide warranty guarantees for notebook and portable products throughout the country.
An added benefit for all Compaq customers is the availability of country-wide toll-free telephone support.
 NEW WORLDWIDE OPERATING EFFICIENCIES
Until now, worldwide compatibility in Japan has been limited by five separate and incompatible operating systems. The capabilities of MS-DOS 5.0J/V and Microsoft Windows Version 3 provides end-users with literally thousands of software options available not only in Japan, but in the more than 70 countries worldwide where COMPAQ products are sold.
Compaq also provides its Japanese customers opportunities to develop local area networks (LANs) or wide area networks (WANs), which are now compatible from Japan to anywhere in the world for the first time. Through Joint Integration Agreements formed with operating systems developers -- Novell, Microsoft, The Santa Cruz Operation and Banyan -- Compaq offers customers multivendor computing solutions with four of the most widely used multivendor networking software: Novell NetWare, Microsoft LAN Manager, SCO/UNIX and Banyan VINES.
 PRODUCT LINE
 COMPAQ SYSTEMPRO/LT (386/25, 486s/25, 486/33)
The COMPAQ SYSTEMPRO/LT family is a modular, upgradable PC server series with RAM capacity expandable to 64MB and 20GB storage capacity. Based on Compaq's own "Intelligent Modularity" architecture, the user's hardware investment is protected since every key component, including the memory expansion board, processor board, advanced VGA board, the EISA bus and the Input/Output board can be easily upgraded.
Customers can create a cost-efficient network environment using the COMPAQ SYSTEMPRO/LT with 5 to 30 members in the work group, using any of the most widely used network operating systems including Novell NetWare, Microsoft LAN Manager, Banyan VINES or SCO/UNIX.
For groups of more than 30 users, Compaq offers customers the larger COMPAQ SYSTEMPRO server series, also compatible with any of these four network operating systems.
Another option available to Japanese customers is the COMPAQ System Manager, which monitors critical server conditions such as temperature, voltage and disk drive health, plus many others. If it detects a problem, the COMPAQ System Manager sends out an alert to the administrator through the user's LAN, WAN or through other administrative workstations.
 COMPAQ DESKPRO/M Series (386/25, 486s/16, 486s/25, 486/33)
This upgradable series of desktop units also protects the users' hardware investment by offering upgradable options on the five sub- systems: memory expansion board, processor board, advanced VGA board, Input/Output (I/O) board, and the EISA bus board. The COMPAQ DESKPRO/M family of personal computers offers customers an outstanding choice of products for use in stand-alone and networked environments. Long-term computer investments are protected through the use of a single hardware platform that provides customers tremendous flexibility to reconfigure and upgrade their PCs at any time.
 COMPAQ DESKPRO 386s/20N
This mainstream PC, with a 20-MHz 80386 CPU, RAM expandable to 16MB, plus two expansion slots, is the best choice for customers who are looking for either an excellent stand-alone unit or for those who choose to build LAN and WAN environments.
 COMPAQ PORTABLE 486c
This compact color portable offers users 33-MHz 80486 computing, RAM expandable to 32 MB, two expansion slots, and high performance drives that provide the speed and storage required for even the most demanding applications. This product offers state-of-the-art technology with a flat-panel display, providing 256 vibrant colors at VGA resolution. Exceptional clarity, high contrast and 4,096 brilliant colors to choose from set the COMPAQ PORTABLE 486c display apart from other portable displays. The COMPAQ PORTABLE 486c's small footprint means less desktop space used -- a significant benefit to Japanese corporations due to the limitations of office space in Japan.
In the United States and Europe, the COMPAQ PORTABLE 486c has been widely used by architects, engineers and software vendors who use complicated demonstration software for CAD, CAE, database management, and financial and scientific analysis.
 COMPAQ LTE Lite/25
This notebook product offers users a 25-MHz 80386 CPU, RAM expandable to 12 MB, with 4.5 hours of advanced battery power.
Available as a popular option is a desktop expansion base. Users simply insert the notebook computer into the expansion base, which offers a full-size keyboard, two expansion slots, a VGA screen, printer interfaces, and support for two mass storage devices which can be used, for example, as a fixed disk drive or tape backup. The desktop expansion base creates in just seconds a desktop unit for the office, with notebook ease and convenience out of the office.
The COMPAQ LTE Lite/25 offers high performance for those looking for a notebook for personal use.
Additional features include Compaq's Hibernation mode, which automatically saves a user's data and application to the fixed disk drive and turns the unit off, conserving 100 percent of the battery power and securing vital data. Hibernation also acts as a bookmark feature that, once the unit is turned on again, returns the user to the same place in the application.
 SOFTWARE SUPPORT
All COMPAQ products introduced today support Japan's top-selling software, including Ichitaro word processor, Lotus 1-2-3, Microsoft Works, MS Excel, MS Word, ASSIST CALC, MIFES, VJE pen, Micro Graphics Designer, and other DOS/V and MS-Windows Version 3 applications.
 ISHV RELATIONSHIPS, SUPPORT
Compaq has developed close relationships with leading U.S. and European software and hardware vendors (ISHV), promoting open industry standards and making it possible for customers to take advantage of software options throughout the world. Compaq will continue to build these ties with major ISHVs for the development of its presence in the Japanese market.
Fifty of the leading software vendors in Japan will participate with Compaq in a two-day seminar event on March 3 and 4 where each will demonstrate software compatible with COMPAQ products.
"Open industry standards make it possible for software developers in Japan to develop new business opportunities in the U.S. and European markets," said Murai. "Compaq will continue to promote development of software for our hardware so that companies in Japan can take advantage of multiple operating efficiencies anywhere in the world."
 EXPANDED DISTRIBUTION PLANNED
Key among Compaq's strategies is the expansion of its distribution channels in Japan, with customer needs in the forefront of those plans.
"Compaq's goal is to offer multiple channels of distribution for our products, so that customers are able to locate and acquire products easily and efficiently," said Murai.
COMPAQ products will be delivered to customers through its dealer network. Also planned are alliances with additional dealers and other channels including systems integrators, distributors and Value Added Resellers (VARs).
