COMPAQ LAUNCHES CONSUMER EDUCATION CAMPAIGN TO SHOW MANY LIFESTYLE BENEFITS OF PERSONAL COMPUTERS; NEW COMPAQ PC TO BE INTRODUCED

HOUSTON, Aug. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Need ideas for planning your garden...decorating your home...sticking to a diet...finding a new recipe...or even tracing your family tree?
Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE: CPQ) is launching a toll-free hotline -- 1-800-759-1533 -- to show how personal computers can fulfill these and hundreds of other family lifestyle needs.
The hotline is part of a nationwide educational program being launched by Compaq to demonstrate the many lifestyle benefits of PCs -- from simplifying once burdensome household tasks to setting up a home office to accessing almost unlimited educational and entertainment information.
Compaq, a world leader in the computer industry, is conducting the campaign in conjunction with this week's introduction of the Presario 425, the first in a family of powerful new PCs targeted at today's fastest growing segment -- the home computing market. The easy- to-use Presario 425 features a unibody design (the computer processor and color monitor are combined in one unit), a host of pre-installed software, built-in digital telephone answering machine and fax/modem and special on-line "Welcome Center" screen which helps users access built-in software. Even beginners can set up and begin using the PC in 18 minutes or less.
Presario is virtually a risk-free purchase since it's backed by Compaq's three-year warranty and lifetime telephone technical support at no additional cost.
"Most people know you can use a computer for basic tasks like word processing or organizing your family budget, but there are thousands of other lifestyle applications that can simplify household chores, save time and money, and add pleasure and enjoyment to family life," said Tina Rathbone, author of "Hundreds of Fascinating & Unique Ways to Use Your Computer."
Tina and her husband, Andy Rathbone, co-author of the international best-selling book "PCs for Dummies," will provide creative ideas on the hotline each month showing how people can put a PC to work in their home. The hotline can also be used to order a free consumer brochure, "Compaq's Family Lifestyle Guide to Personal Computing," filled with even more ideas.
"Most people don't understand bits and bytes, nor do they want to," said Andy Rathbone. "They want to know how personal computers can benefit them, and that's what the Compaq campaign is geared to accomplish."
The Rathbones, both full-time authors, will also be touring the country this fall making appearances on behalf of Compaq at schools and computer retail outlets to spread the message that personal computing offers something for everyone.
