COMPAQ EXPANDS POWER PORTABLE LINE WITH NEW BLACK AND WHITE ACTIVE MATRIX DISPLAY

COMPAQ EXPANDS POWER PORTABLE LINE WITH NEW
BLACK AND WHITE ACTIVE MATRIX DISPLAY
HOUSTON, April 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Expanding its 33-MHz 486 line of power portables, Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE:CPQ) today announced the COMPAQ PORTABLE 486 Personal Computer, the first portable in its class to offer a black and white active matrix display with standard VGA resolution. The new system provides exceptionally crisp screen images and more than twice the performance of most 386-based notebook PCs.
The COMPAQ PORTABLE 486 is ideally suited for customers who need to take power-hungry PC applications on the road, and who also require the readability and familiarity of a desktop PC monitor. The EISA-based, AC-powered portable is Compaq's latest addition to its advanced portable family, following last year's introduction of the COMPAQ PORTABLE 486c, the active matrix color model.
This line of PCs is designed to handle technical and compute- intensive PC applications used most often by architects, engineers, software developers, financial analysts and LAN administrators who have the occasional need to carry their PC to off-site locations or business presentations.
Compaq today also reduced U.S. Suggested Resale Prices (SRP) by up to 13 percent on the COMPAQ PORTABLE 486c, giving customers an excellent option of either black and white or color active matrix displays at very competitive prices. Models of the new COMPAQ PORTABLE 486 (black and white display) begin at $5,899 (SRP), and the COMPAQ PORTABLE 486c prices now start at $8,699 (SRP).
"This new high-end portable responds to customer requests for portability and powerhouse computing capability with a quality black and white display at a competitive price," said Eckhard Pfeiffer, President and Chief Executive Officer, Compaq Computer Corporation. "Compaq has created a family of portables to meet the varying display needs of our target customers. For example, financial consultants who do not typically display their applications to wide audiences, expressed interest in a black and white solution. Creative, sales and training professionals using presentation and graphics applications view color as a critical requirement."
According to John Dunkle, President of WorkGroup Technologies, an international market research firm, "With the success of its powerful color portable, Compaq recognized the market need for an advanced portable with an active matrix grayscale monochrome display. Compaq has seized the opportunity by expanding the family with this new high-end portable." COMPETITIVE PRICING
Key standard features of the COMPAQ PORTABLE 486 include four megabytes of system memory (expandable to 32 MB), a 3.5-inch 1.44- Megabyte Diskette Drive, a full-size detachable keyboard, MultiLock security features, and a one- year worldwide limited warranty. The Model 120, now shipping worldwide to Compaq Marketing Partners, includes a 120-Megabyte Fixed Disk Drive and has a U.S. SRP of $5,899. The Model 210, with a 210-Megabyte Fixed Disk Drive, is expected to ship later this year, when quantities of 210 drives become available. The Model 210 has a U.S. SRP of $6,899.
Until the 210 MB drives are widely available, customers who purchase the 120 MB models of either the COMPAQ PORTABLE 486 or the COMPAQ PORTABLE 486c will have the option to upgrade to the Model 210. The cost of the upgrade will reflect the difference between the model prices.
Compaq lowered the U.S. SRP of the COMPAQ PORTABLE 486c Model 120 to $8,699 from $9,999. The Model 210 was reduced to a U.S. SRP of $9,699 from $10,999. NEW TFT ACTIVE MATRIX BLACK AND WHITE DISPLAY
By introducing Thin Film Transistor (TFT) active matrix black and white display technology to its portable line, Compaq gives customers crystal clear images with high contrast and sharp resolution; outstanding graphics performance; and an exceptional viewing angle -- virtually on par with the viewing quality of a desktop monitor.
The COMPAQ PORTABLE 486 supports VGA resolution with up to 64 shades of gray for effective display of graphics and presentations. Additionally, customers have the option of simultaneously displaying full color presentations on an external monitor, a feature valuable to customers who don't need a color display on their desktop, but prefer color for sales or training presentations. The rapid, 50 milliseconds screen response rate contributes to greater speed in performing complex graphics applications as well as improved mouse tracking. ADDITIONAL HIGH PERFORMANCE FEATURES
The COMPAQ PORTABLE 486 is equipped with these additional features, creating an outstanding combination of desktop-level functionality, high performance and ease of use:
-- Integrated numeric coprocessor for high
