BEIJING, Nov. 19, 1992 -- Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE: CPQ) today announced it has established a $1 million computer training center at Tsinghua University, Beijing, China. The training center, which represents Compaq's first major investment in China, was officially opened today at a ceremony officiated by Compaq President and CEO Eckhard Pfeiffer.
The training center is the result of a unique agreement between Compaq Computer Hong Kong Ltd., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Compaq Computer Corporation, Tsinghua University, and two Compaq distributors in China -- Eekon Computer Systems China and ComputerLand China.
Attending the opening ceremony were Zhang Xiao Wen, president of Tsinghua University, and Kent Lam, managing director of Eekon Computer Systems Ltd.
"This world-class training center offers exceptional opportunities for Tsinghua University, and for China and its people," said Pfeiffer. "It is a great honor for Compaq to work in partnership with the university, ComputerLand China and Eekon Computer Systems to provide technical expertise and training to such a broad user audience."
The training center will be used primarily by each partner to provide computer related training. Courses on hardware architecture, operating systems, networking, and computer applications and appreciation will be offered to personnel from government, institutions, companies and the general public.
Each of the four parties have made significant contributions toward the development of the training center. Tsinghua University, ranked as one of the top learning institutions in China, has provided the physical facilities and its highly educated staff. Compaq has provided $750,000 worth of hardware, software and training materials, as well as expert training to the center staff.
Under the terms of the agreement, all donated Compaq hardware and software will belong to the University at the end of three years.
Eekon Computer Systems (China) Ltd., one of the long- established computer suppliers in China, along with ComputerLand China, has contributed a total of $300,000 toward the costs of physical renovations, furnishings, hardware, software, and networking options.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Eekon's Kent Lam, said the training center was a welcome extension to Eekon's activities in China, and that it's participation in the training center establishment reinforces its long-term commitment to computer users in China.
"Tsinghua University is proud to open this new facility to professionals in China seeking to better understand and utilize the advantages of advanced technology," said University President Zhang Xiao Wen. "We are particularly pleased to be working with a company such as Compaq, which is able to offer comprehensive resources and training from its global pool of expertise. Eekon and ComputerLand have made invaluable suggestions and contributions to the joint project."
"China is a key geographic market for Compaq. Our participation in the development of the training center reinforces our commitment to global customer satisfaction," said Pfeiffer.
Steve Hamblin, vice president of Compaq's Asia~Pacific Division, said that in 1991, Compaq was among the top three PC suppliers to the China market, and sales-to-date in 1992 have been strong.
"We are delighted, therefore, to extend our presence here and further develop a working relationship with such distinguished business partners," said Hamblin.
