COMPAQ DEFINES A NEW CLASS OF MAINSTREAM PC SERVERS COMPAQ PROSIGNIA
 DELIVERS EXCEPTIONAL PERFORMANCE AT AGGRESSIVE PRICES
 HOUSTON, Oct. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- Compaq Computer Corporation (NYSE: CPQ) today launched the COMPAQ ProSignia, a new line of affordable PC servers delivering extraordinary breakthrough performance at prices starting below $2,700(a). Fully configured models start at below $4,500 -- a price that shatters the old idea of what high performance PC servers should cost and what features they should include.
 COMPAQ ProSignia represents an entirely new class of affordable PC servers that far outpaces the competition. It is both blazingly fast and astoundingly inexpensive: an ideal file server. For example, the COMPAQ ProSignia 486/33 is more than 64 percent faster and at least $2,200 less than the 486/50-based Dell PC servers(b). Moreover, the COMPAQ ProSignia 486/33 is at least $1,200 less than 486sx/33-based IBM PS/2 Model 85 PC server(c).
 In addition, it features a three-year on-site warranty(d) and integrated PC server management capabilities -- the industry's first- ever for a mainstream PC server -- which make Compaq PC servers the easiest to support. Compaq provides the tools to not only help prevent PC server downtime, but also help assure rapid recovery (even by remote control) from any incidents that do happen.
 "With the COMPAQ ProSignia line, we are shaking up the server marketplace just as we did the desktop and notebook markets by delivering Compaq quality and performance at aggressive prices," said Eckhard Pfeiffer, president and CEO, Compaq Computer Corporation. "The COMPAQ ProSignia far surpasses any other mainstream PC server available, delivering outstanding performance, advanced server management, upgradability and Compaq support -- a value that customers simply cannot find from the competition."
 The COMPAQ ProSignia addresses the needs of growing numbers of customers who demand affordable PC servers with great performance and features. It delivers extraordinary input/output (I/O) performance, high-powered processing, and server management features to help reduce downtime -- all in an aggressively-priced package rich in integrated technologies.
 The Novell-certified COMPAQ ProSignia offers the best value in the market today -- especially those running NetWare. "The COMPAQ ProSignia, when coupled with NetWare from Compaq, creates a high- performance, low-cost NetWare PC server platform that will further accelerate the growth of network computing," says Jan Newman, Exec. V.P. of Novell's NetWare Systems Group. "The manageability features of the COMPAQ ProSignia complement Novell's network management products and together address our customers' requirements. Compaq and Novell worked closely to develop this platform, and optimize it for NetWare," he noted.
 To address the full range of customer needs, Compaq also offers IDA models with the utmost hardware fault tolerance for mission-critical network applications and a "Windows" edition of the COMPAQ ProSignia targeted at the individual "power user" on the network.
 Most models of the COMPAQ ProSignia are presently shipping to Authorized COMPAQ Resellers worldwide. Firsts in Server Manageability
 A leader in providing the hardware and software tools to manage the performance and reliability of the PC server, Compaq is the first in the industry to offer comprehensive server management as a standard feature of an affordable PC server. The full array of PC server management capabilities in the COMPAQ ProSignia truly simplifies the support of growing PC networks, helps ensure that data is secure, and minimizes expensive PC server downtime: -- Fault Tolerance, includes data protection features
 which help ensure that data is not lost in the event of
 a drive failure; -- Fault Prevention, includes the PC server's capability
 to monitor the health of critical subsystems and alert
 the administrator to impending failures so the part can
 be replaced BEFORE it fails; -- Rapid Recovery Services, include:
 Automatic Server Recovery (ASR), in which a downed PC
 server immediately reboots and either restarts its
 session or prepares for remote diagnostics (a modem is
 used to page the server administrator);
 Critical Error Log, which automatically keeps a record
 of failures in non-volatile RAM (for quick diagnosis);
 and
 Revision History Table, which tracks hardware versions
 of certain boards to provide an easy audit trail for PC
 server upgrades.
 For setup and problem assistance, all Compaq PC servers are backed by Compaq's skilled technical support personnel available by phone at 1-800-345-1518. Starting today, 24-hour-per-day, 7-day-per- week telephone customer support is available for Compaq PC server hardware; and is optionally available for multivendor network operating systems. Leadership Technology
 With its elegant and efficient design, the Compaq ProSignia line breaks new ground in PC servers, delivering higher performance and many features found on more advanced systems, but at extremely aggressive prices.
 Compaq's new 32-bit Fast-SCSI-2 Controller integrated on the system board gives speedy access to up to seven SCSI devices without using a valuable EISA expansion slot. Data travels at 10 MB/sec -- twice as fast as older SCSI implementations. The Fast-SCSI-2 Controller is also available as an option. For network environments which demand hardware fault tolerance, the COMPAQ ProSignia is also available with the recently introduced COMPAQ IDA-2 drive array controller and drives.
 All disk-configured models of the Compaq ProSignia line include Compaq's new 32-bit NetFlex Controller pre-installed. This dual- protocol controller is available separately for $299 -- about the same price as 16-bit network interface cards from other manufacturers. The card comes standard as Ethernet but -- thanks to the flexibility provided by the Texas Instruments SuperEagle chip -- may be modified by an optional snap-in module for Token Ring. It supports all of today's most common network wiring connections. Systems Division and Company Background
