COMPAQ BUSINESS GROWS THREEFOLD IN EASTERN EUROPE IN FIRST HALF 1992;
 COMPAQ WORKS IN FULL PARTNERSHIP WITH LOCAL BUSINESSES
 MUNICH, Germany, Aug. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Compaq Computer Corporation today reported that business in Eastern Europe grew by 166 percent in revenue, and shipments were up 251 percent for the first half of 1992 compared to the same period in the previous year.
 Compaq also reported that despite political troubles in neighboring republics, computing requirements remain strong in Slovenia, where Compaq business grew by over 250 percent in units in the first half of this year.
 "Strong market demand for computerization in the region, particularly in government administration, banking and hotel sectors contributed to this outstanding growth," says Zelimir Ilic, vice president and managing director, Eastern Europe. "Some of the most notable Compaq projects this year include the prime ministers' offices of both Hungary and Poland, the National Parliament of Bulgaria, Polish Bank Handlowy, the National Savings Bank of Hungary and Hotel Kempinski, also in Hungary."
 The computer needs of the region are being met by Compaq's broad product offering. In particular, the COMPAQ SYSTEMPRO, a superserver, offers cost-effective, decentralized solutions that are replacing older more expensive mini/mainframe configurations or even bypassing them. COMPAQ SYSTEMPRO revenue made up a significant percentage of Eastern Europe sales in the first half of 1992.
 The initial reaction to the new affordable COMPAQ PROLINEA desktop line and the COMPAQ CONTURA notebook line, both introduced in June, has been successful. The new products are competing head-on with second and third-tier PC clone distributors.
 The company's performance in the region has also been spurred by the reseller expansion. Since Compaq established operations in Eastern Europe in 1990, the company has been committed to developing the expertise of local companies as the most effective means of reaching and supporting the customer. With 38 private businesses now appointed as Compaq Authorized Resellers in Bulgaria, Croatia, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Lithuania, Poland, Russia, and Slovenia, the company has a very strong base of trained local expertise.
 "Compaq's approach from day one has been to work in full partnership with local businesses in Eastern Europe," said Ilic. "We are committed to helping these infrastructures develop by ensuring that, through our resellers, innovative and effective computing solutions are put in place."
 Compaq Authorized Resellers are fully trained to service and support Compaq's entire product line. The company runs regular training courses in Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Poland and Munich, home of Compaq's European headquarters. A multinational team based in Munich provides full marketing, sales and technical support. Many of the team were born in Eastern Europe and consequently have a valuable grasp of the cultural, economic and linguistic issues involved in doing business in the region. Compaq Solutions
 When Poland held a national parliamentary election in 1991, it was a COMPAQ Authorized Reseller, Prokom, which was awarded the contract to install a computer system to count the votes in the Polish Electoral Bureau.
 The solution implemented by the Prokom-Compaq team was a network based on COMPAQ SYSTEMPRO servers and COMPAQ DESKPRO stations running on SCO Open Desktop UNIX. Regional voting results were sent from around the country via modem to the central office in Warsaw.
 Ryszard Krauze, general manager of Prokom, comments, "With Compaq systems we are able to offer sophisticated, tailored computing solutions that can meet the automation needs of all Polish government organizations."
 Polish State TV, meanwhile, has three networks operating on Compaq systems: one within the advertising department using a Novell operating system; a second within the computer department, and a third operating the television station's Television Information Agency. The latter comprises COMPAQ servers and desktop systems running on Novell and acts as a vital news gathering database for the whole of Polish State TV.
 In Hungary, COMPAQ Authorized Reseller Montana has the task of supplying a computing solution to the offices of the Hungarian prime minister, Dr. Jozsef Antall. Montana, with the support of Compaq and its joint integration partners, Microsoft, Banyan and SCO, won the contract over 40 competitors for its price competitiveness and its strategy of implementing a non-proprietary, open-standards solution. The system is based on COMPAQ SYSTEMPRO file servers, SCO UNIX, Banyan Vines network software and COMPAQ PCs.
 "With this installation as a model for the whole public administration system of Hungary, this contract is only the beginning," said Pal Vadasz, managing director, Montana. Compaq Computer Europe
 Compaq first entered the European market in 1984 and established its headquarters in Munich. Today, Compaq has 13 European subsidiaries, and 24 wholly owned, worldwide subsidiaries, with products sold through more than 5,000 Compaq Marketing Partners, including Authorized Resellers, specialized dealers, value-added resellers, distributors, network integrators, systems integrators and authorized third-party maintainers.
 With worldwide 1991 sales of $3.3 billion, Europe is the largest single contributor to Compaq annual revenues of the three geographic divisions which include North America and Asia Pacific. European revenue accounted for $1.7 billion of the 1991 total.
 With European manufacturing facilities in Erskine, Scotland, Compaq has announced plans for a new distribution center located in The Netherlands that will by early 1993 centralize all shipments to European COMPAQ Authorized Resellers.
