The Bomag BMP851 can be operated as a walk-behind unit or with a standard umbilical cable remote control. Optional infrared or radio-control receivers can control the compactor when it is unsafe for the operator to be nearby. The three remote-control options make the compactor versatile and easy to use for a wide range of soil types including cohesive, semi-cohesive and non-cohesive. The compactor is often used for narrow trenches, foundations and backfills. It works equally as well for work on railways, dams, landfills, sidewalks, bikeways, garage entrances and parking lots. The Vermeer TC-4A is a self-contained 42-inch diameter compaction wheel powered by a Hatz 20-horsepower engine. A single joystick controls the compactor. The wheel creates a vibratory force of 8,000 to 16,000 pounds for compaction. The tamping wheel is customized with variable-width pads for a variety of restoration needs. It can be fit with a four-, six-, eight-, or 11-inch sheep's foot or smooth tamping pads for compacting down to 26-inch depths. A new dry-shaker design runs more efficiently than an oil-bath shaker. Stone Construction Equipment, Inc.

The Stone Rhino SD54 has rubber tires and ride-on vibratory dirt rollers that make an ideal midsize single-drum roller for trenches or site preparation work. The Rhino has 12,000 pounds of centrifugal force and 6,100 to 7,275 pounds of working weight depending on the model. The Rhino is available in six models ranging from 43- to 54-inch widths with a smooth drum, padfoot drum or a padfoot drum with a leveling blade. The Rhino has a 35-degree and a nine-degree oscillating frame, roll-over and falling-object protection, a John Deere 58-horsepower diesel engine, a positraction drive system and instrument gauges. Felco Industries, Inc.

Excavator buckets that can be purchased with a vibratory plate or a compaction wheel are available from Felco Industries. The buckets allow an excavator operator to backfill, smooth and control the depth of his lifts as well as compact the soil. This eliminates the need for an additional worker and machine needed to backfill. By following closely behind a trenchbox, the excavator with a compaction bucket can keep the trench closed. When equipped with optional bolt-on teeth, the same Felco compaction bucket can also excavate. A wide range of bucket sizes are available that can fit equipment ranging from backhoes to large excavators. Info 114

Ingersoll-Rand Company

The SD-40 series is a new line of single-drum vibratory soil compactors from Ingersoll-Rand. The highly maneuverable, compact units are offered with either a smooth drum for compaction of granular, non-cohesive soils, or a padfoot model for compaction of cohesive soils. Soil compactors in the SD-40 series generate 16,000 pounds of centrifugal force. When this force is combined with maximum amplitude and heavy drum weight, operators can reach the required density with fewer passes. Info 115

American Compaction Inc.

DIAMOND Compaction Wheels are designed for Excavators, Backhoes and Skid Steers. Sizes range from 4" to 72" wide. A choice of Sheepsfoot or Wedgepad foot are offered for the various soil conditions. OEM Mounts with pins and soil leveling plate are included. Diamond compaction wheels work well because an open-rim design that allows the wheels to penetrate through a lift of trench fill and compact the soil from the bottom up instead of the top down. The Vibromax Model 405-PDB single-drum roller is designed for the toughest compaction jobs, has over 18,000 pounds of centrifugal force, and is powered by a Cummins 76-horsepower, water-cooled diesel engine. The operator's platform is isolated from vibration and has roll-over protection. Other features are a standard traction control system, grade-ability rating of 58 percent, two-speed drive system, maintenance-free articulation joint, a centralized hydraulic test station, and a two-year warranty for parts and labor. M-B-W, Inc.

A new line of walk-behind vibrator rollers was recently introduced by M-B-W. The new rollers have greater compaction abilities, design enhancements, more horsepower, and other improvements to increase safety and decrease noise. The roller has 10,000 pounds of centrifugal force centered over deep pads on rollers that produce incredible dynamic force. The pads ensure the deepest soil penetration in the toughest environments. The rollers are equipped with 26.5-horsepower, three-cylinder, water-cooled Briggs & Stratton or Daihatsu diesel engines. Info 118
