Byline: The Register-Guard

Devin Ackley and Susan Arnott of Eugene will be among the 47 Oregon Special Olympics athletes participating in the inaugural Special Olympics USA National Games, July 2-7, in Ames, Iowa. The event will attract about 3,500 participants from 50 states, and Ackley and Arnott qualified on the basis of gold medal performances in swimming at last fall's Oregon Special Olympic championships. Ackley will swim in the 25-meter freestyle and 25-meter backstroke events and Arnott will compete in the 50-meter freestyle, 25-meter backstroke and on Oregon's 4x25-meter freestyle relay team.

Events

All-Comers track and field meets at Hayward Field will resume this week with Wednesday's session for ages 12-and-younger starting at 5:30 p.m. and Thursday's session for ages 13-and-older at 5 p.m. The five-week season runs through July 26-27. Family swim: Beginning today, Sheldon Pool will add an evening family recreation swim from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. The schedule will be offered through Aug. 25, and the previously scheduled lap swim will still occur in two lanes of the main pool. Information contact: 682-5314.

Senior-Masters Sports Festival: The 24th annual event is July 17-23 in Eugene and Cottage Grove. Sports and minimum ages include tennis (45 and older), racquetball (women 35 and older, men 40 and older), sand volleyball (30 and older) and golf (50 and older). All participants pay a $6 festival fee; a $14 dinner fee is optional. Entry fees per event are additional and vary by event. Registration forms are available at local athletic facilities and clubs, golf courses and Bi-Mart stores. Entry deadline is July 13. Information contact: 343-3559.

Bicycle time trials: A new series of Wednesday evening time trials is open to cyclists of all levels and abilities. Events will take place Wednesday and July 12 and 26. Check-in at Coburg Elementary School runs from 5:45 p.m. to 6:20 p.m. The first single rider departs at 6:30 p.m., and the first team at 7:00 p.m. over the 15-mile flat course. Entry is $10 per rider per event, plus a $5 OBRA event membership if needed. Individual categories include women, men, juniors, masters, tandems and recumbents. Free long jump clinic: Track City Track Club coach Josh Marek will conduct a long jump clinic at 5 p.m. Wednesday at Hayward Field, prior to the season's first youth All-comers Meet.

Soccer academy: Eugene Metro FC offers a Summer Soccer Academy for U8 through U11 boys and girls (entering grades 3-6). Eight sessions from July 11 through Aug. 5 will run from 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Roosevelt Middle School. Participants can register for $70 or drop in for $10 per session. Baseball camp: Willamette Valley Baseball Academy will hold four-day camps beginning July 10, July 17 and July 24 from 9 a.m. to noon at the Bethel Babe Ruth Baseball Complex. The cost is $30 per week for batting, bunting, pitching, infield and outfield skill instruction. The camp is open to players ages 8-13 from all baseball leagues and areas. Summer swim and water polo league: The City of Eugene Aquatic Program's 10-week introduction to the world of competitive aquatics for boys and girls ages 8-14 is now under way, with two team-oriented practices each week and competition every Friday through Aug. 25. The cost is $20, with separate programs conducted at Amazon, Echo Hollow and Sheldon pools. Call your nearest pool for details.

City league ultimate: Registration is currently open for the City of Eugene summer, adult and coed Ultimate League. Interested individuals ages 14 and older in all ability levels must submit a completed registration form and $18 registration fee to the Athletic office at Amazon Center, 2700 Hilyard St., by 6 p.m. Friday. The league will use a "hat draw" format to place individuals on teams. Games will be played Monday evenings beginning July 10 at Ascot Park. Contact: 682-5409.

River Road Pool offers interested swimmers the opportunity to try scuba diving and snorkeling. Open to age 10 through adult, the Discover Scuba program welcomes sign-ups for July 8 sessions at 11 a.m. or 12:15 p.m. The cost is $15 per person for the one-hour sessions. An expanded four-week scuba certification class will begin one week later, lasting July 15 through Aug. 6. This $250 class includes classroom instruction, pool sessions and open water dives at Florence. For either event, contact Margaret, 461-7777, ext. 216.

Baseball exposure camp: The Central Oregon Prospect Baseball Camp, for high school players seeking visibility by major league scouts and Northwest Division I collegiate coaches, is Aug. 4-6 in Bend. The registration deadline is July 15. The $275 fee includes lunch each day, a Friday barbeque with coaches and a camp T-shirt. Sandlot Baseball is a two-week program for players age 10-14 offering six games per week. A maximum of 40 players will meet Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings at Washington Park, forming four equal teams to play a doubleheader each day during the weeks of July 17 and 24. SATURDAY - The White Cedar Days Run to benefit the Powers Clinic includes a 10,000-meter run, 2 1/2 -mile walk and a one-mile kids' run. TUESDAY, JULY 4 - The 33rd annual Butte to Butte 10-kilometer run and 4 1/2 -mile Mayor's Fitness Walk begin at 8 a.m. at Spencer Butte Middle School, 43rd and Donald streets. Entry is $17 with T-shirt, $11 without, through July 3 and $23 with shirt, $17 without, on race day. Children 12-and-under are free when accompanying a registered adult. Kids' T-shirts may be purchased for $10. SATURDAY, AUGUST 5 - South Coast Running Club's premier event, the 33rd annual Circle the Bay, includes a 30-kilometer run and 30K run relay starting at 8 a.m., and a 30K walk and 30K walk relay beginning at 6:30 a.m. from Ferry Road Park in North Bend.
