Byline: The Register-Guard

Elise Miner, 9, of Coburg, and Tame Latu, 10, of Eugene, both placed among the top eight swimmers in six events each at the state 10-and-younger long course championships at Albany a week ago. Miner, who has been swimming competitively for less than two years, had two seconds, two thirds, a fifth and an eighth place finish in her events. The Coburg Elementary School fourth grader who swims for Eugene City Swim Club picks the 200-meter freestyle as her favorite race. Latu, whose competitive swimming began prior to age six, will complete his 10-and-younger eligibility this month and looks forward to his first race in the 11-year-old class at Emerald Aquatic's Open Water Swim at Dorena Lake on Aug. 22. Latu, who swims with the Eugene Family YMCA aquatic team and will enter sixth grade at Spencer Butte Middle School in the fall, also plays baseball, water polo and golf. In the water, the backstroke and medley races are his favorite events.

Accomplishments

Area teams in JBO tournaments: Seven area teams qualifying for state tournaments in Kidsports first year of affiliation with Junior Baseball of Oregon. Kidsports was host to the Senior American tournament this past weekend at Graham Fields, which included the Fern Ridge team coached by Tom Whiteaker. The Junction City team coached by Bill Fielder also qualified from league play, but lost a state tournament qualifying game. In the Junior American tournament at Beaverton this past weekend, Kidsports was represented by a Springfield team coached by Scot Williams and a team from Winston coached by Robert Wheeler. Coming up this week is the Senior National tournament at Oregon City, which will include an Oakridge team coached by Greg Armstrong, and the Junior National tournament at Sherwood, which will include a Springfield team coached by Jeff Gregory and a Marcola team coached by Shawn Wilkins.

Local horseshoe pitching champ in world tourney: Jerry Gorton of Eugene and Robert Irwin of Creswell will be among 45 Oregonians and 1,201 total competitors in the World Horseshoe Pitching Tournament, which begins today and lasts through Aug. 7 at Pocatello, Idaho. Gorton is the 2003 Oregon men's champion, a title that he wrested away from 19-time winner Ben Wiedrich of Gladstone. Gorton leads the state in ringer percentage at 67.86.

McKenzie Rapids go to nationals: Springfield's McKenzie Rapids ASA 14-and-under class B girls fastpitch softball team is headed to next week's national tournament at Moreno Valley, Calif., after qualifying with a top-eight finish at the Oregon state tournament at Beaverton. Coached by Thurston varsity coach Jim Patrick, the first-year team is trying to raise $12,000 or more for the Aug. 2-8 trip to Southern California, where the tournament format guarantees at least four games.

Clinic/Tryout

Junction City cheerleading: Junction City High School students interested in cheerleading for the 2004 fall season may attend a series of clinics and tryouts in front of the JCHS West Wing gym at 6 p.m. on Aug. 9, 11, 16 and 18. These sessions will lead to fall team selection. Contact: Craig Rothenberger, 520-2045.

Camp

Oregon Association of Rowers: Space still remains for youth entering eighth grade or any local high school to participate in OAR's summer rowing camps. Sessions held Aug. 2-6, 9-13 and 16-20 all include Level I instruction for those with no previous rowing experience. Each camp is $220 and includes daily transportation from South Eugene High School to Dexter Lake, departing at 8 a.m. and returning at 2 p.m. Contact: Arik Wiest, 343-1530 or 915-5875.

Events

Summer Special Olympics: More than 1,200 athletes and 300 coaches will convene in Corvallis next weekend for the 2004 Special Olympics Oregon Summer Games State Championships in golf, gymnastics, softball and track and field. Some of the athletes will participate in the Law Enforcement Torch Runs that originate in Eugene, Lebanon, Reedsport and other communities around the state on Wednesday.

Scandia Golf Tournament: The sixth annual Scandia Golf Tournament is Aug. 14 at Diamond Woods Golf Course in Monroe. This benefit event for the Tiger Alumni Scholarship Fund includes an 8 a.m. shotgun start, four-person scramble format, lunch, prizes and trophies. Entry is $60 per person.
