Byline: The Register-Guard

The Eugene Thunder U12 softball team finished second at the state tournament last weekend and will travel to Moline, Ill., for nationals Aug. 2-8. After splitting their two games July 10, the Thunder won three games in the loser's bracket a day later to reach the title game, where they lost to Blaze Spooner of Beaverton 5-3. Blaze Spooner advanced to nationals as state champs, while the Thunder qualified by winning the regional tournament in June. Teea Rogers went 8-for-16 with five RBIs in the four games on July 11.

Accomplishments

National wrestling tournament: Christopher Green of Cottage Grove will travel to Fargo, N.D., this week for USA Wrestling's National Cadet Championships, following a five-day training camp for national team members at Seaside. Green wrestles in the 131-pound weight class of the mostly freshmen and sophomore Cadet division. Green placed fourth in the Oregon state freestyle tournament at Portland and won a spot on the national team by petition. He recently returned from a Colorado tour with Team Oregon. Green, who also plays football, will be a junior at Cottage Grove High School in the fall.

Area golfers to nationals: A pair of Lane County golfers have qualified for the 2004 Independent Insurance Agent Junior Classic July 25-29 at Ardmore, Okla. Jesse Schutte of Florence shot a 69 and Chris Polski of Eugene had a 70 in the Oregon qualifier tournament earlier this month at Corvallis. Schutte, who will be a junior at Siuslaw High School this fall, was the medalist at the Class 3A state tournament this past spring. Polski, who will be a senior at Sheldon High, was a key member of the Irish's fifth-place team at this past spring's Class 4A state tournament.

Registration

Tennis entry deadline is today: Today is the final day to enter the 2004 Sonitrol Emerald Empire Tennis Championships, July 27 through Aug. 1 at Willow Creek Tennis & Sports Center. Events are available for men and women in the 3.0 NTRP division to open divisions in singles, doubles and mixed doubles. Fees are $19 for singles and $15 per player in doubles for the NTRP events. There is $3,000 in prize money available for the open events. Call Willow Creek at 484-7451.

City league fall softball: Sign-up for the City of Eugene fall softball leagues will be accepted for returning fall teams July 27-28 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the Athletics Office, 2700 Hilyard St. If there are openings, new teams may register on July 29-30. Teams must submit a complete roster and full team entry fee of $275 at the time of registration. League play will begin Aug. 30 and continue through early October. Contact: 682-5409.

Kidsports fall sports: Registration is now open for flag football (grades 2-3 and 4-5), tackle football (grades 6-8) and recreational soccer (kindergarten through grade 4). Player registration may be done at either Kidsports office or online at kidsports.org. Klassic soccer registration forms and fees for grades 5 through 8 are collected through team coaches. Camps

Yoncalla volleyball: The Dig It Volleyball Camp at Yoncalla High School is July 26-29. Players in grades 5-8 will attend from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and those in high school will meet from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The cost is $35 and details are available from YHS varsity coach Cheryl Simons, 849-2175 or 849-2550. Yoncalla High graduates Terri Schlater and Judy Gay, who both have collegiate coaching experience, will assist Simons.

Free football camp: A free football skills and drills camp/clinic for youth entering grades 3-5 will be July 26-28 from 9 a.m. to noon at the North Eugene High School turf field. The camp is sponsored by Kidsports and organized by Jody and Jacky Allard, and all interested youth in the Eugene/Springfield area are welcome. Events

All-Comers schedule altered: The final pair of Oregon Track Club all-comers meets this summer will be switched in order this week. The meet for athletes age 13 and older will be Tuesday evening at Hayward Field, beginning at 5 p.m., instead of the usual Thursday schedule. The meet for youth ages 7-12 will remain on Wednesday, beginning at 5:30 p.m.

Free tennis rally: Youth ages 8-18 are invited to this event on Wednesday at the Willamalane Park tennis courts at 12th and G streets in Springfield. Players ages 8-11 play from 10 a.m. until noon and ages 12-18 play from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Participants will receive free T-shirts. Contact: Bob Reed, 683-1843.

Benefit golf tournament: St. Vincent de Paul's 2004 Tournament is the primary fund-raiser for the more than 500 children living in St. Vincent's affordable housing in Lane County. Road Run/Walk Calendar

SUNDAY, AUG. 1 - Bark in the Park, a fund-raiser for Greenhill Humane Society, is the only local run to include dogs. The 9 a.m. 5-kilometer run and 2-kilometer walk offers awards in two categories: solo runners and runners with dogs. Costumes for both dogs and their owners are encouraged in the fun walk. SUNDAY, AUG. 1 - Nike's Run Hit Wonder Tour makes its downtown Portland debut at 8:15 a.m. with 5-kilometer and 10-kilometer runs and up to 10,000 participants. To register, visit nikerunhitwonder.com.

SATURDAY, AUG. 7 - The fifth annual Community Classic, featuring a 5-kilometer run/walk course over southwest Eugene streets starts at 8:30 a.m. and finishes at the Eugene Faith Center on 13th Avenue. SATURDAY, AUG. 7 - The 31st annual Circle the Bay Run, Walk and Relays, a 30-kilometer walk and three-person walk relay, will begin at 6:30 a.m. from Ferry Road Park in North Bend. The run and run relay, sponsored by the South Coast Running Club, begin at 8 a.m. Individual run or walk entry fees are $18 through Wednesday, $22 between Thursday and Aug. 2, and $30 thereafter. SUNDAY, AUG. 8 - The Spirit of Springfield Run is Lane County's only 12-kilometer (7.46 miles) race. Accompanying it will be a 5-kilometer run/walk and a kids' run, all in conjunction with the 15th annual Springfield Filbert Festival. Both runs loop through the east end of Alton Baker Park and finish at Island Park, site of the festival. All participants receive a complimentary breakfast. AUG. 13-14 - The fifth annual American Cancer Society Relay for Life will take place from Friday noon until Saturday noon at Miller Park in Florence.

SATURDAY, AUG. 14 - The 30th annual Scandia Run follows a flat and fast 10-kilometer course in and around Junction City during the Scandinavian Festival weekend. The 10K run begins at 8 a.m. and a 4.4-mile walk begins five minutes later. Registration through Aug. 9 is $15 with shirt, $10 without; children 11-and-younger $8.
