Accomplishments

Local duo in world swim meet: Competing with 8,100 athletes from 68 countries in Riccione, Italy, Dick Weick and Steve Johnson, who train at Amazon Pool with the Emerald Aquatics club, fared well at the FINA World Masters Swimming Championships in mid-June. Weick placed first in the 50-meter backstroke, second in the 100-meter freestyle, third in the 200-meter individual medley, fifth in the 50-meter freestyle and eighth in the 50-meter breaststroke, within his age group. Johnson placed second in the 3,000-meter open water race in the Adriatic, fourth in the 800-meter freestyle, sixth in the 400-meter freestyle, eighth in the 200-meter freestyle and eighth in the 100-meter butterfly.

Lane County boy places at Safeco Field: Ryan Smith, 9, of Mapleton placed third in his age group at the Pepsi Major League Baseball Pitch, Hit and Run Team Championship held June 27 at Seattle's Safeco Field. Smith qualified for the regional competition by winning his age division at the Eugene sectional conducted by Kidsports a month ago.

Registration

Tennis lessons: Willamalane Park and Recreation District summer tennis lessons begin this week at the Willamalane Courts in Springfield. The two-week sessions are open to players of all experience levels and meet on Tuesday and Thursday evenings. Register at the Memorial Building, 765 A St., Springfield. Camps

Elmira boys basketball: The Falcon Boys Basketball Camp is July 20-23 at the Elmira High School gym. Boys entering grades 3-7 will attend 9 a.m. to noon and boys entering grades 8-12 will attend 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The cost is $30 and includes a camp T-shirt. The Tuesday through Friday camp is for serious players who aspire to play varsity basketball in the future. Directed by EHS coach Aaron Schermerhorn and his staff; high school players will also assist with the morning session. Contact: call 935-2925 for the registration form.

Tryouts

Baseball, softball travel teams: Coast to Coast Amateur Athletics will hold tryouts at North Eugene High School's Swede Johnson Stadium on July 31 for "pay to play" overseas travel teams. The baseball tryouts for boys ages 11-18 is at 10 a.m. and softball tryouts for girls ages 16-18 is at 2 p.m. Twenty-one other tryouts will be held throughout the U.S. and players receiving "qualified" letters are then eligible to pay for a tournament tour. Softball teams will travel to Australia in December and January, and to Hawaii next summer. Baseball teams will travel to Puerto Rico, the Netherlands and Australia in 2005. Events

Track and field seminar: Former University of Oregon decathlete Billy Pappas will discuss training and preparation for multi-events competition in a free presentation Wednesday at 5 p.m. at Hayward Field just prior to the youth all-comers meet. The seminar is presented by Track City Track Club.

Little League district tournaments: All-Star teams from Emerald Valley (Eugene) and McKenzie (Springfield) Little Leagues will open district tournament play this week as the first step toward the state tournaments. The featured game will be Saturday at 11:30 a.m. at Trainsong Park off Bethel Drive as the Minors Division (age 9-10) event kicks off. Other games will be played July 12-14 before the championship is decided at Roseburg on July 16. At the Majors level (11-12), all games are July 5-11 at Roseburg. And at the Juniors level (13-14), one game per day will be played July 5-10 at Churchill High School. Today's game is at 10:30 a.m., while the rest of the week's games begin at 6:30 p.m.

Team golf tournament: Mallard Creek Golf Course will hold the first annual Willamette Valley Team Championship Golf Tournament on July 24-25. The two-round event for two-member teams will have a best-ball format Saturday and a scramble format Sunday. Coed adult soccer tournament: A five-a-side fund-raiser tournament will be played Aug. 14 to benefit T.J. Reed, a member of a Eugene soccer family who is suffering from leukemia. The 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. event at Ascot Park is open to players age 18 and older. Each team may have a maximum of eight players with a minimum of two women. Registration is $150 per team with the choice of two divisions: Young-Fast-Skinny or Old-Slow-Fat. Registration is online at oregonunitedsoccer.org. Road Run/Walk Calendar

WHAT'S NEW

SUNDAY, AUG. 1 - Nike's Run Hit Wonder Tour makes its debut in downtown Portland at 8:15 a.m. when as many as 10,000 runners are expected to participate in the 5-kilometer and 10-kilometer races. They will pace to the sounds of live performances of legendary "one-hit wonder" bands that will be stationed along the race course. Portland joins Los Angeles, New York and Chicago as the third of four stops on the tour that saw 20,000 runners descend on Los Angeles in April. The Portland run will be limited to 10,000. Among the participating bands are Tommy Tutone, A Flock of Seagulls, Tone Loc, General Public, Kajagoogoo and Devo.

SATURDAY, AUG. 7 - The third annual Community Classic featuring a 5-kilometer run/walk course in southwest Eugene starts at 8:30 a.m. and finishes at the Eugene Faith Center on 13th Avenue. Details and fees to be announced.

SATURDAY, AUG. 14 - The 30th annual Scandia Run uses the same flat and fast USATF-certified 10-kilometer course through Junction City and surrounding countryside that has produced PRs for many runners. The 10K run begins at 8 a.m. and the 4.4-mile walk begins five minutes later. Details and entry fees to be announced.

SATURDAY, AUG. 21 - A fund-raiser for the North Eugene High School cross country program, the 5-kilometer Community Fun Run starts and finishes at River Road Park and loops through residential streets. Entry is $5 and there are no T-shirts. Day-of-race registration only from 7:15 to 7:55 a.m. Contact: Michael, 688-4052.

SATURDAY, JULY 10 - The Bohemia half-marathon (13.1 miles) follows a USATF-certified course from Cottage Grove Lake to Lincoln Middle School in Cottage Grove. There will also be a 10-kilometer run. JULY 16-17 - The Willamette Valley Relay, an approximately 140-mile walk-only event, travels from Champoeg State Park near St. Paul to Eugene's Alton Baker Park using back roads. Walking relay teams of eight to 12 participants pay a team entry fee of $725 and must provide three volunteers. SUNDAY, JULY 18 - Run in the Country is a USATF-certified half-marathon course on flat, fast and scenic country roads around Coburg. Events include the half-marathon run and walk, a 5-mile run, 2-mile walk and kids fun run. Net proceeds go to the Coburg Kids Trust. SATURDAY, AUG. 7 - South Coast Running Club presents the 31st annual Circle the Bay Run, Walk and Relays. The 30-kilometer walk and three-person walk relay begin at 6:30 a.m. from Ferry Road Park in North Bend.
