Byline: The Register-Guard

Nathan Calkins, 18, of Eugene won the 77-kilogram weightlifting state championship at the University of Oregon Classic earlier this month. Calkins successfully completed five of the six lifts done in competition with a 149-pound snatch and a 204-pound clean and jerk for a 353-pound total. Calkins, who will enter his senior year at Churchill High School, lifts with the Heavy Athletics Team at Iron Works Gym of Creswell.

Accomplishments

Local team in national tournament: The Oregon Magic, U12 girls AAU state basketball champion, travel to Nashville, Tenn., this week to represent the state in the July 4-11 Division II AAU national tournament. The Magic posted a 22-4 record during the spring season against Oregon and Washington teams. The 10-member team is made up of sixth- and seventh-graders Hannah Long of Monroe Middle School, Rachel Wolfe-Goldsmith of Roosevelt Middle School, home schooler Katie Collins of Eugene, Alyxe Bruns and Ashley Smith of Shasta Middle School, Kenzie Smith of Briggs Middle School, Brandi Dunn of Hamlin Middle School, Brittney Pierce of Agnes Stewart Middle School, Kaitlyn Kronberger of Cottage Grove and Chloe Martin of Junction City. The Oregon Magic are coached by Chuck and Diane Wenger and assisted by Tom Bruns and Bill Goldsmith.

World record weightlift: Steve Shipley of Cottage Grove last weekend set a world record for the 259-pound weight class in the 47-53 age group by bench-pressing 600.7 pounds during the Great Northern Bench Press and Dead Lift Championships at Tacoma. Shipley, who trains at Iron Works Gym in Creswell, has previously set several age and weight group world records.

World and American throw records: Harvey Lewellen of Springfield, competing with the Oregon Track Club Masters, set a 75-79 age-group world record of 136 feet, 5 inches in the hammer throw at the Portland Masters Classic last week. Lewellen also set American age-group records of 131-9 1/2 in the discus, 50-10 3/4 in the 16-pound weight throw and 28-5 in the 35-pound superweight throw. He also won his age-group competition in shot put (37-9) and high jump (4-1).

Instruction

Outdoor tennis: Low-cost outdoor tennis lessons for players of all ages and skill levels start the week of July 5 in Springfield, Junction City, North Eugene, Eugene and Cottage Grove. Call Bob Reed at 683-1843 for details.

Registration

In-Line hockey: Sign-up is currently open for the city of Eugene men's, women's and youth Summer In-Line Hockey leagues. Interested players must submit a completed registration form and league fee to the athletic office at Amazon Center, 2700 Hilyard St., by July 16. Based on the number of registrations, the program may include novice, intermediate and advanced leagues within the men's, women's and youth (age 7 and older) divisions. Games will be played on Monday and Wednesday evenings between Aug. 2 and Aug. 25 at the Amazon Park hockey/tennis facility on 24th Avenue just east of Amazon Parkway. The cost for the eight-game season is $35 for youth and $40 for adults. Call 682-5409.

Baseball scholarships: There are a limited number of full scholarships available for eligible Springfield residents for the Willamalane Bobby Quick Learn to Play Baseball Program. Open to boys and girls having completed grades 1-5, the program runs Monday through Thursday mornings starting today through July 29. Dodgeball is coming: Maximus Sports Group hopes to introduce "nontraditional sports enthusiasts" in the Eugene-Springfield area to dodgeball, using rubber-coated foam balls for "maximum social enjoyment." Camps

Track and field: Track City Track Club will offer a five-week camp at Sheldon High School from June 21 through July 25, with activities taking place the same times as regular TCTC practice, 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday, rain or shine. A fee of $100 will include coaching, USATF membership, track uniform, personalized T-shirt and entry into the all-comers and Track City International Classic track meets. UO Sports O Rama: Space remains in this three-week multiple sports camp for boys and girls ages 5-11. Adult instructors will teach swimming, trampolining, frisbee and more during the weeks of July 19, July 26 and Aug. 2. Events

Trapshooting championships: The Cottage Grove-Eugene Sportsmen's Club will host the Amateur Trapshooting Association Oregon State Championships July 1-5. The Creswell-based club at 81078 Highway 99 invites the public to see what the sport is about, visit the vendors of shooting sports and related equipment, and watch many of the top-ranked amateur trapshooters from the Pacific Northwest. The club is also open to the public for practice Tuesday evenings (6-9 p.m.) and Sunday mornings (9 a.m. to 1 p.m.). Contact the club at 942-2021 during the public hours.

After dark golf tournament: Lane Community College is sponsoring a benefit golf tournament at the Short Ridge at RiverRidge course on July 9, the proceeds to help finance LCC athletics. The entry fee of $140 per foursome includes nine holes of nighttime golf, a glow-in-the-dark ball and barbecue. Packet distribution will begin at 8 p.m. with two flights scheduled for 9:30 and 10:45 p.m. Contact LCC athletics director Sean MonDragon at 463-5548.

SATURDAY, JULY 3 - The White Cedar Days Run is a benefit for the Powers Clinic, sponsored by the South Coast Running Club. Registration is day-of-race only at the Powers Clinic in Powers. SUNDAY, JULY 4 - The 31st annual 10-kilometer Butte to Butte run begins at 8 a.m. with the traditional start up Donald Street hill, a segment avoided by those choosing the 4.5-mile Mayor's Fitness Walk. Both courses start at 43rd and Donald and end at Skinner Butte Park. Entry is $16 with T-shirt, $10 without, through July 3. Day-of-race entry increases to $22/$16. SATURDAY, JULY 10 - The Bohemia half-marathon follows a USATF-certified course from Cottage Grove Lake to Lincoln Middle School in Cottage Grove. There will also be a 10-kilometer run. SATURDAY, JULY 10 - Join the 19th annual running of the turkeys through McMinnville as the 8-kilometer Turkey Trot race and two-mile fitness walk coincides with the 44th annual three-day Turkey Rama festival. Entry fees through June 27 are $12 run, $5 walk, and increase to $15/$6 on race day. JULY 16-17 - The Willamette Valley Relay, an approximately 140-mile walk-only event, travels from Champoeg State Park near St. Paul to Eugene's Alton Baker Park using back roads. SUNDAY, JULY 18 - Run in the Country is a USATF-certified half-marathon course on flat, fast and scenic country roads around Coburg. Events include the half-marathon run and walk, a 5-mile run, 2-mile walk and kids fun run. Net proceeds go to the Coburg Kids Trust. Entry fees range from $27 for the half-marathon with T-shirt down to $3 for the kids run without shirt. There is no day-of-race registration. Call 343-7414 or visit goodrace.com.

SATURDAY, AUG. 7 - South Coast Running Club presents the 31st annual Circle the Bay Run, Walk and Relays. The 30-kilometer walk and three-person walk relay begin at 6:30 a.m. from Ferry Road Park in North Bend. The run and run relay begin at 8 a.m. Individual run or walk entry fees are $18 through July 21, $22 between July 22 and Aug. 2, and $30 thereafter. SUNDAY, AUG. 8 - The Spirit of Springfield Run is Lane County's only 12-kilometer (7.46 miles) race. Accompanying it will be a 5-kilometer run/walk and a kids run, all in conjunction with the 15th annual Springfield Filbert Festival. Both length runs loop through East Alton Baker Park and finish at Island Park, site of the festival. All participants receive a complimentary breakfast. AUG. 13-14 - The fifth annual American Cancer Society Relay for Life will take place from Friday at noon until Saturday at noon at Miller Park in Florence.
