Accomplishment

Locals in national tournament: The Eugene Quaxe seventh grade boys team travels to Memphis, Tenn., this week to represent Oregon in the AAU National Basketball Championship tournament, lasting from June 27 to July 4. The nine-member team is Joe Gunderson, Erik Knapp, Logan Marks, Jordan Myers and Robert Rudinsky, all from Kennedy Middle School; Rahkim Price and Tyler Price of Roosevelt Middle School; Gianni Iaquinta of O'Hara Catholic School and Craig Loper of Meadow View School. The Quaxe are coached by Don Myers, Gary Knapp, Larry Lawrence and Kim Price.

Help Wanted

Volunteers sought for July 4 run: Timers, registration aides, course marshalls and finish line helpers are needed for the July 4 Butte to Butte 10K run. Volunteers will be needed prior to July 4 for registration help at the Hilton Hotel and between 7 a.m. and 10 a.m. on the day of the race. Registration

City league coed ultimate: Registration is now open for the city of Eugene summer adult coed ultimate league. Interested individuals must submit a completed registration form and entry fee of $15 to the athletics office at Amazon Center, 2700 Hilyard St., by June 29. The league is a "hat draw" format with individuals' names being drawn from a hat for assignment to the various teams. Games begin July 12 at Ascot Park. The league is open to all players age 14 and older in all ability levels. Contact the athletics program at 682-5409.

Camps

Marist baseball: This four-day fundamentals of baseball camp for players entering grades 3-8 is June 28 through July 1, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., at Marist High School. The fee is $50, and families may register the first day or download the camp brochure at marisths.org. Contact: Phil Dube, 688-7827.

Junction City girls basketball: Current and past Junction City High School players will keep the camper to player ratio low for the 18th edition of the camp, June 28 through July 1. Girls entering grades 4-8 will meet from 8:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. The fee is $60. Players entering grades 9-12 meet from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The fee is $30. Registration takes place at the high school during the first half-hour on June 28. Call 688-3848 for more information.

Junior golf camp: Mallard Creek Golf Course near Lebanon will offer three three-day golf camps for juniors ages 7-16. Camp dates are June 28-30, July 26-28 and Aug. 23-25. Youth football: The National Nineman Football League is hosting a football camp July 10 at Churchill High School. The 9 a.m. session for ages 6-14 costs $20 and teaches football basics. Contact: Randy Stiles Jr., 689-6779.

Advanced conditioning clinics: CORE Athletics is offering a series of functional training clinics throughout the summer, four at Lane Community College during July and August and several at South Eugene High School, the latter serving as fund-raisers for the Oregon Association of Rowers junior team. The clinics address the biomechanical needs of different sports and are tailored to sports-specific movements for each individual athlete. Injury prevention is one benefit of the training program. Events

Hayward Classic track meet: "America's Premier Masters Meet" will be June 26-27 at Hayward Field. The host Oregon Track Club Masters invite men and women age 30 and older to compete in the five-year age groups. In addition to the usual track events, the Classic offers two racewalks, a steeplechase, 10,000-meter run, weight throw, superweight, an age-graded mile and five relays. USA Track & Field registration is necessary and may be acquired at the meet headquarters (Phoenix Inn) during packet pickup Friday or at the meet Saturday. Ultimate Frisbee clinic: The Eugene women's Ultimate Frisbee team, All Jane, will offer a skills-building clinic Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon at Roosevelt Middle School. The event is designed to introduce women new to the rapidly growing sport and to help more experienced players improve their skills. Registration opens at 8:30 a.m., and the cost is $3. Women of all skill levels are welcome, and no experience is necessary. Participants should bring both dark and white shirts, and cleats are acceptable. Contact: Brooke Miller, 349-2818.

Road Run/Walk Calendar

WHAT'S NEW

SUNDAY, AUG. 8 - The Spirit of Springfield Run is Lane County's only 12-kilometer (7.46 miles) race. Accompanying it will be a 5-kilometer run/walk and a kids run, all in conjunction with the 15th annual Springfield Filbert Festival. Both length runs loop through East Alton Baker Park and finish at Island Park, site of the festival. All participants receive a complimentary breakfast. Early registration is $16 with T-shirt, $11 without shirt. Day-of-race fees are $22/$15. Contact Jack Spaulding at 343-7414 or visit goodrace.com.

SATURDAY, JUNE 26 - Liv's Fun Run and Walk is a 5-kilometer event to benefit the Pleasant Hill Pre-School and named for 2 1/2 -year-old Olivia McCurdy who was killed in a traffic accident on Highway 58 last year. The course starts (9 a.m.) and finishes at Trent Elementary School and meanders through Elijah Bristow State Park. Registration is $25. Contacts: Pat LeBrun, 736-9826, or goodrace.com.

SATURDAY, JULY 3 - The White Cedar Days Run is a benefit for the Powers Clinic, sponsored by the South Coast Running Club. Registration is day-of-race only at the Powers Clinic in Powers. A bus to the start departs at 8:30 a.m. Events starting at 9 a.m. include a 10-kilometer run, 2 1/2 -mile walk and a 1-mile kids run. Contact: Constance Fandel, (541) 439-3057.

SUNDAY, JULY 4 - The 31st annual 10-kilometer Butte to Butte run begins at 8 a.m. with the traditional start up Donald Street hill, a segment avoided by those choosing the 4.5-mile Mayor's Fitness Walk. Both courses start at 43rd and Donald and end at Skinner Butte Park. Entry is $16 with T-shirt, $10 without, through July 3. Day-of-race entry increases to $22/$16. SATURDAY, JULY 10 - The Bohemia half-marathon (13.1-miles) follows a USATF-certified course from Cottage Grove Lake to Lincoln Middle School in Cottage Grove. There will also be a 10-kilometer run. SATURDAY, JULY 10 - Join the 19th annual running of the Turkeys through McMinnville as the 8-kilometer Turkey Trot race and 2-mile fitness walk coincides with the 44th annual three-day Turkey Rama festival. Entry fees through June 27 are $12 run, $5 walk and increase to $15/$6 on race day. JULY 16-17 - The Willamette Valley Relay, an approximately 140-mile walk-only event, travels from Champoeg State Park near St. Paul, to Eugene's Alton Baker Park using back roads. Walking relay teams of eight to 12 participants pay a team entry fee of $725 and must provide three volunteers. SUNDAY, JULY 18 - Run in the Country is a USATF-certified half-marathon course on flat, fast and scenic country roads around Coburg. Events include the half-marathon run and walk, a 5-mile run, 2-mile walk and kids fun run. Net proceeds go to the Coburg Kids Trust. Entry fees range from $27 for the half-marathon with T-shirt down to $3 for the kids run without shirt. There is no day-of-race registration. Contact: call 343-7414 or visit goodrace.com.

SATURDAY, AUGUST 7 - South Coast Running Club presents the 31st annual Circle the Bay Run, Walk and Relays. The 30-kilometer walk and three-person walk relay begin at 6:30 a.m. from Ferry Road Park in North Bend. The run and run relay begin at 8 a.m. Individual run or walk entry fees are $18 through July 21, $22 between July 22 and Aug. 2, and $30 thereafter. AUGUST 13-14 - The fifth annual American Cancer Society Relay for Life will take place from Friday noon until Saturday noon at Miller Park in Florence. The fundraiser event last year included participation by Mapleton, Reedsport and Yachats residents. Further details will be announced.

SATURDAY, AUGUST 14 - Registration is open for the 29th Crater Lake Rim Runs and Marathon. Participants have a choice of four events-6.7-mile walk, 6.7-mile run, 13-mile run and marathon. There is a combined limit of 500 participants. Bicycle Race/Ride Calendar

JULY 30-AUG. 1 - The third annual Co-Motion Classic Tandem stage race includes a hill climb prologue, two road races and a time trial in "A" and "B" categories. Limited to 50 tandems, the entry fee is $125 before June 30 and $150 in July. Contact Co-Motion Cycles at 342-4583.
