COMMUNITY SPORTS.

COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT

Last year Kevin Bozada and Brett Whyte were rival seniors playing lacrosse for Churchill and Sheldon high schools, respectively. Bozada played soccer as well as lacrosse at Churchill, and Whyte combined football and lacrosse at Sheldon. Today they are teammates, the only Eugeneans on the University of Oregon's nationally ranked men's club lacrosse team. The freshman midfielders each have scored during Oregon's 9-0 start, the latest win coming Saturday, 15-7 over Oregon State. Third-ranked Oregon could move up to first when this week's Collegiate Lacrosse Association poll is announced on Wednesday. Oregon, which has completed its home schedule, faces Boise State at 1 p.m. Saturday at Bend High School.

NOTES & ANNOUNCEMENTS

To submit events

The deadline for community sports notes and announcements is Thursday at noon. Because of the volume of requests, announcements may appear only once. Submit listings to: Gil Hulin, P.O. Box 10188, Eugene OR 97440, e-mail them to ghulin@guardnet.com or fax them to 687-6674.

Achievements

Ellen Cook, an eighth-grader at Roosevelt Middle School, continues a successful run of Eugene youth basketball players to qualify for the Elks Hoop Shoot national finals in Springfield, Mass. A week ago, the Oregon state champion outshot her Washington, Idaho and Alaska competition to win the regional title and a trip to New England in mid-April. Cook made 22-of-25 free throws at Portland, an improvement over the 19-, 18- and 21-for-25 results that carried her through the local, district and state levels.

Events

South Eugene High School will officially dedicate its newly renovated track on Friday at 6 p.m. in memory of local runners Tom and Bill McChesney. The track is used not only by SEHS and middle school teams but by the overall Eugene running community, and it will serve as a practice facility during the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials. An all-comers mile event will take place immediately after the dedication. The following two announcements concern Saturday and Sunday events at the track.

The "Back to Track" Jog-a-thon will be Saturday at 9 a.m. with high school, middle school, masters and open runners raising money to complete the South Eugene track restoration project. Those wishing to participate or donate directly may contact Jeff Hess at 687-3208 or Deb Weinman at 729-4190. All gifts are tax-deductible.

A free track and field clinic for kids ages 5-14 will be held Sunday from 1 p.m. to 3:15 p.m. at the South Eugene track. Emerald Valley Track Club will provide 10- to-15-minute demonstration clinics in a half-dozen events: sprints, throws, hurdles, long jump, high jump and pole vault (ages 11 and older) in a rotation format. Random-draw prizes have been donated by Eugene Running Company, Oregon Track Club, Run Pro, Team Eugene, Team XO and The Step Beyond. Register for the event this week at Eugene Family YMCA and Willamalane Community Recreation Center, 250 S. 32nd St., Springfield, or at the track before the clinic. Contact Jeff Hoskins at trackandtrout@comcast.net for more information.

Beaver Huddle: The OSU booster club meets at 11:45 a.m. today at 725 W. First Ave., Eugene. The cost is $10 and includes a buffet lunch. Speakers are men's rowing coach Steve Todd and women's rowing coach Emily Ford.

The cost is $90 for three days or $35 for a single day. Call 344-5100 or download a registration form at eugenemetrofc.org.

Oregon United Soccer Academy's Spring Break Camp for boys and girls U7 to U17 is March 25-30, 9 a.m. to noon. The cost is $95 for the full week or $25 per day. Contact OUSA head coach Alan Cox at 505-0850 or ousaheadcoach@comcast.net for registration details and location.
