Byline: The Register-Guard

Former Eugenean Melissa Sanborn, now living in McKenzie Bridge and training with Express Racing, is the lone Oregonian on the Subway pro cycling women's team. With the season stretching from March to October, the 33-year-old Sanborn's next events are the end of May in Montreal, followed by professional bicycle races throughout the Midwest and East Coast during the summer, and competition from San Francisco to Bermuda in September. Sanborn, who grew up in Salem and moved to Eugene to attend the University of Oregon, where she played collegiate tennis and soccer, is obviously on the road much of the time. Her teammates come from Seattle, Boise, Utah and Colorado. Sanborn, who feels that she has "what it takes to succeed as a professional athlete," wants "to pursue the sport of cycling. My main goal is to win a world championship. I start with the big goal in mind and then fill in the gaps with small steps gaining the experience to make it to the top."
