COMMUNICATIONS SYSTEMS, INC. ANNOUNCES FOURTH QUARTER RESULTS

HECTOR, Minn., Feb. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Communications Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ-NMS: CSII) (CSI) today reported revenues of $54,764,000 for the year ended Dec. 31, 1992, an increase of 44 percent from $37,928,000 in 1991. Earnings came to $5,960,000 or $1.34 per share, up 40 percent from $4,267,000 or $.97 per share a year ago.
The company's 1992 earnings included a one-time tax benefit of $481,000 or $.11 per share due to the required adoption of FAS No. 109, a new accounting and disclosure standard for income taxes. Excluding the impact of this non-recurring gain, the company's per share earnings were $1.23 in 1992, up 27 percent from year-earlier levels.
Revenues for the fourth quarter of 1992 rose 35 percent to $12,649,000. Fourth quarter earnings amounted to $1,459,000 or $.33 per share, an increase of 45 percent from $1,008,000 or $.23 per share in the same period of 1991.
Curtis A. Samson, CSI's president and chief executive officer, said he is particularly gratified by the company's 1992 operating results in view of the sluggish economy. He said all of CSI's primary businesses performed well during the year, including domestic sales of voice and data communications apparatus, international apparatus sales and contract manufacturing.
Sampson said the 1992 acquisition of Austin Taylor Communications, Ltd., a leading U.K. telephone apparatus manufacturer, made a particularly strong contribution to CSI's consolidated results. Acquired on Feb. 1, Austin Taylor posted revenues of $8,594,000 through Dec. 31, 1992. Sampson said CSI also benefited from Austin Taylor's solid profit margins.
CSI is a leading manufacturer of modular connecting and premise wiring devices for the voice and data communications markets. The company's common stock is traded on the National Market System under the NASDAQ symbol CSII.
