COMMITTEE BEGINS WORK ON REGIONAL EARTHQUAKE RESPONSE PLAN
OAKLAND, Calif., Jan. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- MTC is kicking off a $75,000 project with the Bay Area Regional Earthquake Preparedness Project (BAREPP) tomorrow to address the coordination of transportation services in the event of another major earthquake.
The project is aimed at better defining the roles, responsibilities and legal authorities of the transit agencies; developing model mutual aid agreements among affected public and private agencies; and designing a system to process emergency public information. It will also identify potential weaknesses in the transportation system and make recommendations about key items -- such as fuel and electrical power -- necessary to maintain essential transportation services.
On Wednesday, the project steering committee will hear a proposal from a team of consultants who have been hired to investigate current transit agency practices and policies pertaining to emergency response. The consultants will host a series of five interactive workshops for transportation providers, analyze the data collected and prepare a Draft Regional Earthquake Response Master Plan by this summer.
The potential for using computer simulation models to assist in vulnerability analysis, hazard mitigation, and emergency planning and response also may be explored.
BAREPP is providing funding for the project through the National Earthquake Hazards Reduction Program. MTC is exploring other sources of funding in anticipation of implementing the plan by the end of 1992 or early 1993. The steering committee will meet in MTC's Staff Conference Room at 10 a.m. MTC is located at 101 Eighth St. in Oakland.
MTC is the regional transportation planning and financing agency for the nine-county Bay Area.
