Commencement 2000 was established by the USDA Forest Service to meet the challenge of achieving a skilled and diverse workforce by 1995 and beyond. The goal is to influence and educate minority children and youth about natural resource and environmental career options. It also supports and rewards motivated students with educational opportunities that lead to jobs with the USDA Forest Service and other natural resource agencies and organizations.
As Commencement 2000 partners, Merritt Community College and U.C. Berkeley's College of Natural Resources work closely with the feeder schools, the Northern California Chapter of the Society of American Foresters, and the Forest Service to develop curriculum, coordinate out-of-class projects, and conduct special programs.
