COMCAST TO DEMONSTRATE TELECOMMUNICATIONS MILESTONE AT SPECIAL NEWS CONFERENCE THURSDAY

 COMCAST TO DEMONSTRATE TELECOMMUNICATIONS MILESTONE
 AT SPECIAL NEWS CONFERENCE THURSDAY
On Thursday, Sept. 10, at 10:30 a.m., at Comcast Corporation (NASDAQ-NMS: CMCSA, CMCSK) headquarters, 1234 Market St., Philadelphia, 17th floor, a telecommunications milestone will take place.
At a special news conference, Comcast and other industry executives will provide a glimpse of the telecommunications future as they place a telephone call linking four persons in three cities and two continents using an innovative blend of existing and emerging technologies -- without the use of local telephone company facilities.
This call is dramatic because it will usher in the future of telecommunications -- a new era of freedom for consumers which will enable them to be reached anywhere -- with one phone number that will have the intelligence to know if they're at home, on the road, at the beach, or even traveling overseas.
Brian Roberts, Comcast's president, will join Donald Rumsfeld, chairman of General Instrument Corporation, and John Battin, senior vice president of Motorola, Inc. in placing and receiving these calls between Philadelphia, Trenton, N.J., and London. The four-way transatlantic "telephone call" will show how cellular telephone, Personal Communications Service (PCS) technology and cable television facilities can be integrated to complete calls with no use of local telephone companies. This could lead to new phone competition in the United States, as it has in the United Kingdom.
Mayor Edward G. Rendell is also expected to take part in the call.
The demonstration also illustrates the ability of Comcast, one of the nation's leading cable television and cellular telephone companies, to provide "one-stop telecommunications shopping" through synergies created by fiber, cable, cellular and personal communications technologies.
Following a brief news conference outlining the technologies and their integration, the actual call will take place.
There are numerous opportunities for print and broadcast coverage. Detailed information will be provided regarding the technology used, how it will impact consumers, and the entire conversation will be amplified and broadcast live at Comcast headquarters. B-roll footage is available, and television facilities will be provided. In addition, all the top corporate executives who have worked to make this achievement possible will be available to discuss its impact both now and in the future.
