COMCAST NAMES DONALD HARRIS TO LEAD CELLULAR DIVISION
PHILADELPHIA, Feb. 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Comcast Corporation (NASDAQ-NMS: CMCSA, CMCSK) today announced the appointment of Donald A. Harris as vice president of Comcast Corporation and president of its Cellular Communications Division.
In this capacity, Harris will have responsibility for the cellular activities of Comcast, including the Personal Communications Services (PCS) experimental trials which are currently in process.
Prior to joining Comcast, Harris held several senior management positions with PacTel Cellular, most recently serving as vice president and general manager of that company's flagship Los Angeles cellular business. Previously, his responsibilities with PacTel Cellular included vice president-corporate development, and president and chief executive officer of the San Francisco cellular partnership.
Harris began his career in the cellular communications industry as a consultant with McKinsey & Company, where he worked with telecommunications clients in formulating strategies for entering the yet-to-be-born cellular communications business. Subsequently, he joined Communications Industries (CI), managing the construction and operation of its cellular systems in San Diego and Atlanta, as well as representing CI's partnership positions in several major markets including: Tampa (Fla.), St. Louis, Dallas, Arizona and southern Kentucky. Harris is a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and he obtained his master's in business administration from Columbia University.
"Comcast looks forward with enthusiasm to Mr. Harris' joining our company," stated Brian L. Roberts, president, Comcast Corporation. "His extensive industry knowledge and proven leadership skills will be very helpful to our cellular operations and to Comcast. His experience in building and running large metropolitan markets makes him uniquely qualified to lead Comcast's growing presence in the cellular communications industry, particularly as we near completion of the combination with Metromedia's Philadelphia system."
Comcast Corporation is principally engaged in the development and operation of cable communications systems. The company's consolidated and affiliated operations served more than 2.7 million subscribers at Sept. 30, 1991. This included more than 813,000 subscribers representing 50 percent of the total subscribers served by Storer Communications, Inc. Neither the results of operations nor the financial condition of the Storer systems are included in the company's consolidated statements.
The company currently provides cellular telephone services in the Northeast to markets encompassing a population in excess of 2.1 million. In June, Comcast agreed to combine its cellular systems with those of Metromedia Company in Philadelphia and parts of New Jersey. Upon completion of the transaction with Metromedia, Comcast's combined cellular operations will serve a total population in excess of 7 million.
In addition, Comcast provides sound communications services. The Class A and Class A special common stock are traded in the over the counter market and are reported in the National Market System under the NASDAQ symbols CMCSA and CMCSK, respectively.
