 OF PUNTA GORDA
FORT WORTH, Texas, Oct. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Columbia Hospital Corporation (NASDAQ: CHOS) announced today that it has agreed to acquire the Medical Center Hospital of Punta Gorda from the Adventist Health System - Sunbelt in exchange for three of Columbia's existing hospitals. Medical Center Hospital is a 208-bed acute care hospital in Punta Gorda, Fla. In exchange for Medical Center Hospital, Columbia will transfer to the Adventist Health System, Kissimmee Memorial Hospital, a 120-bed general acute care hospital in Kissimmee, Fla., Thomasville Hospital, a 49-bed general acute care hospital in Thomasville, Ala. and Willow Creek Hospital, a 92-bed psychiatric hospital in Arlington, Texas.
Medical Center Hospital is located five miles south of Columbia's Fawcett Memorial Hospital in Port Charlotte, Fla. The facilities' locations will enhance cost saving efficiencies through shared services and enhanced purchasing power, while enabling Columbia to deliver the highest quality health care. The combined patient volumes and facility space will allow new services to be offered and strengthen current services. Fawcett Memorial Hospital and Medical Center Hospital will offer a new women's center providing OB/GYN services. The open heart program will be strengthened and expanded.
"This transaction is consistent with focusing our attention and resources on developing comprehensive health care networks in targeted metropolitan areas," said Richard L. Scott, chairman and chief executive officer of Columbia. "The cost saving efficiencies involved in acquiring Medical Center of Punta Gorda and the efficiencies involved in consolidating Columbia's Miami Beach Community Hospital with Miami Heart Institute, a transaction announced two weeks ago, provides Columbia the opportunity to contract with managed care companies on a profitable basis."
Columbia Hospital Corporation was recently ranked the fourth fastest growing publicly owned company in the United States by Fortune Magazine. Columbia operates comprehensive health care networks in five regions: El Paso, Houston, and Corpus Christi, Texas, and Miami and Fort Myers, Fla.
