COLUMBIA COMPLETES NORTH GABLES TRANSACTION WITH SALE OF FACILITY TO
VENCOR, COLUMBIA CONTINUES TO BUILD SOUTH FLORIDA HEALTHCARE SYSTEM
FORT WORTH, Texas, Jan. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Columbia Hospital Corporation (NASDAQ: CHOS) today announced that it has completed the purchase of North Gables Hospital in Miami which was immediately sold to Vencor, Inc. (NASDAQ: VCOR) of Louisville, Ky. Terms of the sale were not disclosed.
Adhering to its policy of acquisition and consolidation of healthcare facilities, Columbia opted to sell North Gables to Vencor. Medical-surgical patients from North Gables Hospital will be moved to one of Columbia's other facilities in the area, Kendall Regional Medical Center or Victoria Hospital. Vencor will operate the hospital as a long-term, chronic hospital for catastrophic patients. Columbia will provide outpatient surgery and diagnostic services at North Gables Hospital until construction of a new outpatient surgery and diagnostic center nearby is completed. Columbia now owns five acute-care hospitals in South Florida with 1,514 licensed beds and various other facilities, representing approximately 12 percent of the Miami healthcare market.
Richard L. Scott, chairman and chief executive officer of Columbia Hospital Corporation, stated, "Consolidation of healthcare facilities, such as the North Gables transaction, presents an opportunity for margin improvement through lower costs per patient day." Scott added, "We have successfully demonstrated this strategy with two previous acquisitions and are confident that we can provide more efficient healthcare through further consolidation."
Columbia Hospital Corporation currently owns and manages 11 general, acute-care hospitals and two psychiatric hospitals, with 2,815 licensed beds in five markets. Columbia also owns various related businesses in its markets, including outpatient diagnostic centers, an outpatient surgery center, a cardiac rehabilitation/wellness center, mobile lithotripsy services and an outpatient radiation therapy center. Additionally, Columbia owns Sutter Corporation, a medical products company that manufactures and distributes medical and surgical products, primarily continuous passive motion devices.
