COLORADO SELECTS ENVIROTEST FOR THE STATE'S AUTO EMISSIONS TESTING CONTRACT

TUCSON, Ariz., Dec. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- Envirotest Systems Corp. (NASDAQ-NMS: ENVI) today announced that Colorado has selected Envirotest for the state's auto emissions testing contract, covering Denver and its surrounding counties, including Boulder County. The Colorado program will average approximately 850,000 paid tests per year, and is expected to generate annual revenues of approximately $20 million and a total backlog of $140 million.
The Colorado contract is Envirotest's third selection in a two month period. It follows directly on the heels of Envirotest being selected for the downstate New York and Pennsylvania emissions programs, the largest and second largest programs, respectively, in the industry. The downstate New York, Pennsylvania and Colorado contracts together are expected to increase Envirotest's annual revenues from $90 million to approximately $245 million, and the Company's backlog from about $300 million to over $1.3 billion.
Chester Davenport, Chairman of Envirotest said, "We are very pleased to be selected as the contractor for Colorado's auto emissions testing program. This selection clearly demonstrates that Envirotest is very competitive in winning contracts in areas of varying size, demographics and climate.
"We look forward to helping Colorado clean up its air in a convenient and customer friendly manner. We will be offering motorists in Colorado the most advanced technology available today, along with a repair assistance program. Additionally, we expect the program will create approximately 1,200 full and part-time jobs in the Denver metropolitan area."
The Colorado contract will be for a period of seven years, with the programs under the contract for Denver and Jefferson, Adams, Arapahoe and Douglas counties beginning Jan. 2, 1995. The program for Boulder County will commence July 1, 1995.
Envirotest anticipates that contract negotiations with the state will begin promptly.
Envirotest Systems Corp. is the leading provider of centralized vehicle emissions testing programs for states and municipalities. In addition, Envirotest is the only domestic provider of contractor- operated centralized testing services outside the United States.
