COLONY HOTELS & RESORTS TURNS 20

HAWAII HOMECOMING HIGHLIGHTS COMPANY'S STRATEGIC FOCUS FOR THE '90S
HONOLULU, March 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Colony Hotels & Resorts, a division of Carlson Companies, Inc., returns to its Hawaiian birthplace today to commemorate its 20th year of operation. Benefitting from itsrich foundation and early growth in one of the world's top travel destinations, the company has evolved into a premier hotel and resort management, franchise and marketing company with more than 40 properties in 10 states and four countries.
"Because all good things come full circle, we're back in Hawaii to mark this important occasion, strengthening our commitment to the market by kicking-off a new development program," said Joan Sills, new president of Colony Hotels & Resorts. "These efforts will add to our existing collection of 11 hotels and resorts on Oahu, Maui, Kauai, Molokai and the Big Island of Hawaii," she added. "For the past two decades, we have been busy successfully transplanting our unique experience in managing, franchising and marketing resorts, hotels, condominium and vacation interval properties to other parts of the world. We realized with the intense competition in the domestic leisure travel industry, a tremendous opportunity and demand for our expertise exists right where we grew up," Sills continued.
The company is hosting a series of receptions for travel partners, owners, prospective independent hotel affiliates and developers throughout the islands this week, sharing its commitment of resources to the market, introducing key management and strengthening local ties.
Sills, a 16-year veteran within the hospitality industry, was hand- picked to direct Colony into the '90s by Juergen Bartels, president of Carlson Hospitality Group, Inc., an operating division within Minneapolis-based Carlson Companies.
The aggressively expanding worldwide Hospitality Group also includes Radisson Hotels International, Country Hospiond luxury cruise ship to be launched this May.
Sills has extensive executive-level experience in operations, planning, strategic marketing and sales, and is the only woman president of a major hotel company with worldwide operations.
As part of Colony's heightened focus on Hawaii, last month Sills appointed Gary Ettinger, vice president of operations for the Hawaii Division. Ettinger, a native of Hawaii and veteran of the local hotel and condominium industry, will be a tremendous asset in building Colony's presence in the islands and working closely with the hotels to further elevate service, operation and marketing standards. Tom Cole, also of the Hawaii office, is helping colony's related expansion in the Pacific Rim, managing the opening of the newly-constructed Colony Kamala Bay Terrace Resort in Phuket, Thailand, this April.
Colony's regional sales staff in Honolulu is adding a new position to its sales staff, enabling their team to conduct more direct sales calls, spend more time with wholesalers and assist individual hotels with sales efforts. This year, Colony will step-up its Mainland sales effort in San Jose, Calif. by opening another regional office in Los Angeles. The Colony sales team will begin to work more closely with Radisson's 12 international sales offices to increase in-bound business.
Colony Hotels & Resorts manages, markets and franchises more than 40 international hotel, resort, condominium and vacation interval properties worldwide, from exotic hideaways in Phuket, the Hawaiian and Caribbean Islands, to ski resorts in popular destinations. Colony's Hawaiian locations include Kanaloa at Kona, Mauna Loa Village in Keauhou and Kona Bali Kai in Kona, Hawaii; Lae Nani, Lawai Beach Resort, Poipu Kai and The Cliffs at Princeville on Kauai; Napili Shores on Maui; Kaluakoi Hotel & Golf Club on Molokai; the Pacific Monarch and Diamond Head Beach properties in Honolulu on Oahu.
