COLLEGE BASEBALL ROUNDUP: HOMER IN 12TH POWERS UCLA.
After more than four hours of baseball, Chris Denove finally had enough.
The UCLA sophomore hit a 12th-inning walk-off home run Tuesday to lift the Bruins to a 3-2 victory over visiting UC Santa Barbara at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
Bruins right-hander Daniel Miltenberger earned his first victory of the year while Loren Fraser dropped to 2-1 after allowing the game-winning homer.
The Bruins got on the scoreboard early in the first when Wes Whisler had an RBI single to left scoring Chad Concolino, who reached on an error and then stole second. Mike Svetlic's two-out RBI single gave UCLA a 2-0 lead.
The score remained unchanged until the Gauchos' half of the eighth when, with the help of three walks and a hit, UCSB knotted the game 2-2.
--USC 2, UC Irvine 0: Josh Rummonds, Bret Butler and Ian Kennedy combined on a five-hit shutout for the visiting Trojans (4-7) in a nonconference game at Anteater Ballpark.
Rummonds threw six innings, giving up four hits. Butler gave up a hit in two innings of middle relief and Kennedy struck out the side in the ninth to earn his first collegiate save.
The Trojans took the lead in the fifth when Joey Metropoulos singled to left, scoring Michael Moon from second. In the top of the sixth, Daniel Perales singled to right with Baron Frost on second and a fielding error by Danny McCarthy allowed Frost to score.
--Long Beach St. 8, Pepperdine 2: Brandon Boesch gave up five runs on four hits and the visiting Waves (4-7) never recovered, losing the nonconference game at Blair Field.
