COHERENT INC.: COHERENT, IBM TO WORK ON NEW BLUE-LASER DEVICES

PALO ALTO, Calif., Feb. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Coherent Inc. (NASDAQ: COHR) and International Business Machines Corp. (NYSE: IBM) today announced an agreement relating to the development of frequency- doubled semiconductor diode laser devices operating at blue wavelengths, Coherent said today. Under the terms of the agreement, IBM provides Coherent with a license to use blue-laser technology developed at the IBM Research Division's Almaden Research Center in San Jose, Calif., and rights to use some of IBM's patents. In addition, Coherent and Almaden agreed to work closely with each other in an effort to move this technology from the laboratory to the marketplace. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Bernard Couillaud, vice president and general manager of Coherent's Laser Group, said, "We are delighted to be collaborating with IBM on this project. Coherent has been working on this technology for the past several years and we believe that combining our technical, manufacturing and marketing expertise with IBM's scientific and engineering resources will increase the possibility of producing products that use this technology. We believe that this type of blue-laser device can be used for analytical and medical instrumentation, inspection and measurement, printing and optical data storage applications."
Over the past three years, IBM's Almaden scientists have invented and developed a new technology for efficiently converting the output of an infrared diode laser to blue light.
"This agreement is an example of our heightened interest in accelerating the development of its Research Division technologies into products," said Juri Matisoo, director of the Almaden Research Center. "We're excited about the potential of this technology to quadruple the amount of data that can be stored on optical disks. Through this agreement, we hope that our technology can find early commercial use and stimulate new applications for which current lasers are not suitable. As a recognized leader in the laser industry, Coherent is well-suited to develop, manufacture and market these products in areas in which we have little business experience."
IBM's Almaden scientists and engineers are experts in the computer science, physics, chemistry and materials science that underlie the computing, communications, electronics and data storage industries.
Coherent is recognized as a world leader in the design, manufacture and marketing of lasers for science, medicine and industry.
