COGENTRIX PROMOTES FRANK J. BENNER TO PRESIDENT

 CHARLOTTE, N.C., April 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Frank J. Benner has been promoted to president and chief operating officer of Cogentrix, the company announced today. Benner previously had been senior vice president of engineering and construction for the company.
 George T. Lewis, Jr., chairman and chief executive officer of Cogentrix, said, "Frank Benner brings to his new position a wealth of experience gained inside Cogentrix and in other assignments before he joined Cogentrix in 1985. He has been responsible for engineering, construction and actual daily operations of all our energy-producing facilities."
 Benner succeeds Robert F. Weidaw who resigned to pursue business interests.
 He has more than 25 years of experience working with and managing electrical power generating facilities. After graduating from the U.S. Naval Academy, he served on various nuclear-powered submarines in engineering and weapons assignments.
 From 1974 to 1985 Benner worked for Burns and Roe, Inc. of Oradell, N.J., in various administrative, technical and management positions concerned with the design and construction of nuclear and fossil fuel power plants.
 Benner served as project director on the construction of Cogentrix's first power plants, which were completed in 1985. In 1986 he became vice president in charge of engineering and construction for Cogentrix and in 1988 became senior vice president.
 Besides his Bachelor of Science at the Naval Academy, Benner earned a Master of Business Administration from the University of North Florida.
 Cogentrix develops, builds, owns and operates non-utility, energy- producing facilities. The privately-held company currently operates 10 facilities generating electricity for sale to utilities and thermal energy for sale to industrial companies.
