 for Olympic Torchbearer Event
ATLANTA, July 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Twelve years ago, gymnast Dan Muenz was ready to represent the United States on the 1980 U.S. Olympic Team.
But his dreams of competing for Olympic gold went unfulfilled.
On Sunday, July 19, Coca-Cola will give Muenz and other athletes from the 1980 U.S. Olympic Team a new opportunity to take part in an Olympic experience. All will carry the Olympic Flame on the road to Barcelona as part of the International Olympic Torchbearers Program, sponsored by The Coca-Cola Company.
Muenz and wrestler Gene Mills, volleyball player Janet Baier-Howes and distance runner Richard Buerkle will leave Friday for Alicante, Spain, where on Sunday each will carry the torch one-third of a mile as part of its 3,449-mile route through Spain.
Sunday's torch relay, from Murcia to the resort city of Alicante, will include the athletes and consumers selected through various Coca- Cola-sponsored radio promotions in Atlanta; Baltimore; Birmingham, Ala.; Boston; Chicago; Raleigh, N.C.; Dallas; Indianapolis; Los Angeles; Miami; Minneapolis; Milwaukee; Oklahoma City; Phoenix; Philadelphia; Pittsburgh; Rochester, N.Y.; Salt Lake City; San Antonio; San Francisco; Seattle; Spokane, Wash.; St. Louis; Tampa, Fla.; and Washington.
The Coca-Cola Company is sponsoring more than 150 people from more than 50 countries to participate in the Spanish event, through cooperation of the International Olympic Committee, the Barcelona Olympic Organizing Committee, and various National Olympic Committees.
Coca-Cola is the official soft drink of the 1992 Olympic Games.
