Help Qualify to Volunteer for the 1996 Olympic Summer Games
ATLANTA, April 23 /PRNewswire/ -- More than 250 Atlanta-area Coca-Cola employees are celebrating "National Volunteer Week" this Saturday by grabbing shovels, mops and paint brushes to help refurbish the John C. Birdine Neighborhood Facility in Lakewood. Neighborhood residents are expected to join in the clean-up effort.
The activity is one of a series of volunteer projects offered through the Company's "Reaching Out" program, which provides employees the opportunity to earn hours to help them qualify to be a part of the corporate volunteer "Olympic Force" during the 1996 Olympic Summer Games. The Coca-Cola Company is a member of the Corporate Council of the Atlanta Committee for the Olympic Games.
In 1992, Company volunteers helped refurbish the Georgia-Hill Street Neighborhood Facility in the Summerhill area, and the Dunbar Neighborhood Facility, which serves the Mechanicsville and Pittsburgh communities of Atlanta.
"We have been extremely pleased with the interest shown by our employees in our 'Reaching Out' program and their efforts in these refurbishing projects," said Ingrid Saunders Jones, vice president, Corporate External Affairs. "We now have more than 700 employees earning hours to help qualify to volunteer during the Centennial Games, and expect their enthusiasm to continue as we become involved in more community activities, such as with The Atlanta Project."
To be considered as a candidate for the Olympic Force, employees are required by the Company to complete at least 100 hours of volunteer service by Dec. 1, 1994, and participate in at least two Company- sponsored projects annually.
The refurbishing effort at the John C. Birdine Neighborhood Facility (formerly the Southeast Neighborhood Facility) will include landscaping; building playground equipment; and painting and cleaning the day care center and throughout the three-story complex.
Activities on Saturday get underway at 9 a.m. and will continue through 4 p.m., rain or shine.
