COALITION DENOUNCES FORD FOR 'TRADING GIFTS FOR SIGNATURES'

COALITION DENOUNCES FORD FOR 'TRADING GIFTS FOR SIGNATURES'
WASHINGTON, Feb. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- The Coalition for Auto Repair Equality issued the following:
Today the Coalition for Auto Repair Equality (CARE) denounced Ford Motor Company (NYSE: F) for using the enticement of free Cross pen and pencil sets to obtain signatures in support of H.R. 1790, the Design Innovation and Technology Act. This bill would enable Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEMs) to create a monopoly for autos, light and heavy-duty trucks, and off-road equipment such as construction and agricultural vehicles, resulting in skyrocketing consumer costs.
"This is a clear example of the lengths to which the auto manufacturers will go to obtain support for this bill," said David Parde, president of CARE. "It is obvious that Ford could not obtain support from members of the auto aftermarket parts community ethically by appealing to their sense of fair play in the marketplace. Instead, they were offered the opportunity for free gifts if they signed correspondence directed to their congressman."
CARE's supporters have received no such gratuities. They are totally committed to the defeat of this bill to save their jobs and their customers' right of choice. Over 325,000 supporters of CARE's position have signed petitions in opposition to H.R. 1790. CARE is alerting key members of Congress to the unethical manner in which the Ford signatures were obtained.
If this legislation should pass, this bill would give domestic, as well as foreign, car, light and heavy truck, and off-road vehicle manufacturers a government imposed monopoly over production, sale and distribution of vehicle replacement parts for the first 10 years of that vehicle's "life." It would force consumers back to the OEMs for all parts and eventually all repairs, resulting in American consumers having to pay inflated prices for their monopolized replacement parts.
