COALITION CALLS ON FDA COMMISSIONER TO REMOVE OTHER BIASED PANELISTS
WASHINGTON, Feb. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Stanley M. Brand, counsel to the newly-organized Citizens Coalition for Truth in Science, responded today to FDA Commissioner David Kessler's stripping of the voting status of advisory panelist Norman Anderson. The FDA panel will vote next week on the safety of silicone gel breast implants.
"Commissioner Kessler's action on Norman Anderson is an obvious concession, but it is at best a partial action. Kessler has retained as voting members Rita Freedman and Vivian Snyder who also have repeatedly and openly expressed bias against silicone gel implants. They are as biased as Norman Anderson and should be disqualified as voting panelists," stated Brand.
The Coalition for Truth in Science is a group of women and doctors suing the FDA to reverse its "voluntary" moratorium on silicone breast implants and, among other things, charging that some members of the advisory panel are unqualified and biased.
On Feb. 6, the Citizens Coalition charged in a lawsuit filed in federal court in Washington that Kessler violated the constitutional right to due process and circumvented the agency's own medical device-approval procedures in declaring the moratorium on the sale and use of silicone gel implants. The group charges that the moratorium actually amounts to an order halting the distribution of silicone implants. It asks the court to lift the moratorium and to enjoin the FDA from ordering a recall of silicone implants until all available medical evidence is presented to and considered by a qualified and unbiased panel.
