CNN International Coverage: Dec. 28 -- Jan. 3Hajj 2006: The essential journey.

... In the coming days, more than two million people from all over the world will travel to the holy sites of Islam in Saudi Arabia to carry out their personal pilgrimage. CNN correspondent, Zain Verjee, will be in Saudi Arabia reporting live on the events surrounding this annual spiritual journey that all Muslims are expected to make at least once in their life. "The Hajj is a deeply personal journey for those who perform it, but also an event of global significance for the more than 1 billion Muslims around the world. This coverage, which represents a significant logistical operation for CNN, reflects our commitment to the region and to offering our viewers unrivalled coverage of world events," said Rena Golden, senior vice president of CNN International. "The dispatches and reporting surrounding the Hajj provide a deeper, more nuanced look into one of the pillars at the heart of the religion." For the 10th consecutive year, CNN International will bring exclusive stories and images from pilgrims coming from around the world. Zain Verjee will offer live reports starting on Thursday, December 28, the day before the Hajj begins, to give insight on how the country is preparing to facilitate millions of people until January 3, the sixth and final day of the pilgrimage to Mecca. Through intimate portraits, Verjee will introduce viewers to pilgrims from Iran, Africa, the US and elsewhere. In addition to the special coverage from Makkah, CNN correspondents based in Asia, Europe, the Middle East and the US will also contribute reports on how Muslim youth view their spirituality and social standing growing up in both predominantly Muslim and non-Muslim countries.
