CNG NAMES STEPHEN E. WILLIAMS SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT AND GENERAL COUNSEL; TWO NEW VICE PRESIDENTS NAMED

 PITTSBURGH, Dec. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Consolidated Natural Gas Company (NYSE: CNG) today elected Stephen E. Williams senior vice president and general counsel of the company.
 The company also named Mark G. Magnuson and George A. Taaffe, Jr., as vice presidents and assistant general counsels. The appointments are effective Jan. 1, 1993.
 Mr. Williams, 44, has been associate general counsel of CNG. He succeeds David E. Weatherwax, 62, as general counsel. Mr. Weatherwax will continue as senior vice president, administration of Consolidated.
 In his new post, Mr. Williams will be responsible for Consolidated's legal and regulatory affairs, and will oversee certain aspects of CNG's adaptation to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission's "Order 636," which involves an industrywide restructuring of the interstate gas transmission business.
 Mr. Williams also will become a member of Consolidated's corporate Executive Office, along with Mr. Weatherwax, Lester D. Johnson, who is executive vice president and chief financial officer, and George A. Davidson, Jr., Consolidated's chairman and chief executive officer.
 Mr. Williams joined Consolidated in 1974 as an attorney with CNG Transmission Corporation, Consolidated's interstate gas transmission subsidiary. He became general counsel of CNG Transmission in 1987 and served in that post until May of 1992, when he was named associate general counsel of Consolidated. He is a graduate of Harvard College and of the West Virginia University School of Law.
 Mr. Magnuson, 44, joined Consolidated in its Washington, D.C. office in 1980 as counsel and became assistant general counsel in 1989. He directs legal and regulatory affairs in the company's Washington office. He is a graduate of the University of Virginia and of the Emory University School of Law.
 Mr. Taaffe, 46, joined Consolidated in 1988 as a general attorney and became assistant general counsel in 1989. He had earlier been a partner with the law firm of Feltman, Karesh, Major & Farbman in New York City and, before that, was associate general counsel for Joy Manufacturing Company. He directs the legal staff at Consolidated's corporate headquarters in Pittsburgh. He is a graduate of Allegheny College and of the University of Pittsburgh School of Law. He is also an adjunct professor at Carnegie Mellon University's Graduate School of Industrial Administration.
 Consolidated is one of the country's largest producers, transporters, and distributors of natural gas. Its primary marketing areas for natural gas are in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, New York and other states in the Northeast. The company explores for and produces gas and oil throughout the United States and in Canada.
