CN-BN AGREEMENT WILL EXPEDITE WESTERN CANADIAN TRAFFIC
 TO AND FROM U.S. MARKETS
MONTREAL, Nov. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- CN North America began implementing a haulage agreement with Burlington Northern Railroad today that will streamline the flow of freight now moving from CN's customers in Western Canada to Chicago and other U.S. markets.
Paul M. Tellier, CN's president and chief executive officer, said the first train from Winnipeg, carrying traffic which originates in British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba, operated today. The new service enables CN trains to operate through to Chicago and get traffic to shippers' final destination up to three days faster.
Lumber and wood pulp, petrochemical, potash and sulphur shippers in Western Canada, for example, will benefit from seamless service. The improvements will also help the Port of Vancouver be more competitive in attracting new freight traffic and international container business from Pacific Rim customers, said Mr. Tellier.
He said: "Customers, CN and BN will benefit from increased asset utilization. Traffic will continue to move over CN's Duluth, Winnipeg and Pacific rail line between Fort Frances and Duluth, Minn. But intermediate handling at Duluth of some 50,000 carloads a year of current Canadian traffic will be vastly simplified through our haulage agreement with BN."
The initiative will help CN keep pace with competitive pressures and market demands by improving customer service and market access for shipments bound to and from the U.S.
