CMS ENERGY REPORTS HIGHER FIRST-QUARTER EARNINGS

DEARBORN, Mich., April 28 /PRNewswire/ -- CMS Energy Corporation (NYSE: CMS) today announced net income of $71.9 million, or 90 cents per share in the first quarter of 1993, an increase of 41 percent compared to $50.9 million, or 64 cents per share for the same period in 1992. Operating revenues for the quarter were $1.01 billion, an increase of 4 percent over revenues in the first quarter, 1992.
CMS Energy said the earnings reflect higher electricity and natural gas sales by Consumers Power Company, its principal subsidiary, than in the same period in 1992, and also reflect the resolution of certain power costs of Consumers Power Company as a result of a settlement order issued March 31, 1993, by the Michigan Public Service Commission relative to the utility's power purchases from its 49-percent-owned affiliate, the Midland Cogeneration Venture (MCV).
Also contributing to the quarterly earnings growth were significantly improved earnings by CMS Energy's non-utility subsidiaries including NOMECO Oil and Gas Company, its petroleum and natural gas exploration and production unit; CMS Generation Co., its developer, owner and operator of independent power plants and its CMS Gas Transmission and Marketing companies.
In commenting on the quarterly results, CMS Energy Chairman and Chief Executive Officer William T. McCormick Jr. said: "As a result of the MCV settlement, we now expect more predictable and stable earnings from Consumers Power, which in turn will be able to more effectively meet its obligation to serve Michigan's growing demand for electricity and natural gas service."
Electricity sales for the quarter were 3.3 percent higher than the first quarter of 1992, totaling 8.1 billion kilowatt hours (KWh) compared to 7.8 billion KWh. Industrial electric sales were up 7.1 percent, reflecting an improvement in the state's economy.
Natural gas deliveries for the quarter increased 5.9 percent compared to the same period in 1992, reflecting a return to more normal temperatures, as well as improvements in Michigan's economy.
CMS Energy Corporation is a $3.1 billion (sales) diversified energy company with businesses engaged in the distribution of electricity and natural gas, interstate storage and transmission of natural gas, oil and gas exploration and production, independent power generation and utility services. CMS Energy Corporation's principal subsidiary is Consumers Power Company, Michigan's largest utility and the nation's fourth- largest gas and electric utility.
