CMS ANNOUNCES POWER PLANT ACQUISITION

DEARBORN, Mich., April 23 /PRNewswire/ -- CMS Energy Corporation (NYSE: CMS) said today its independent power generation subsidiary, CMS Generation Co., has acquired a 50-percent interest in the Lyonsdale cogeneration plant, a 19-megawatt project in upstate New York.
The plant has a long-term contract to sell electric power to Niagara Mohawk Power Corporation (NYSE: NMK), the utility serving northern New York, and steam to the Burrows Paper Company, located adjacent to the power plant, about 70 miles northeast of Syracuse.
CMS Generation, the country's fourth-largest independent power producer, bought the interest from Diamond Energy, Inc., a subsidiary of the Mitsubishi Corporation of Japan. Diamond Energy will retain the remaining 50-percent interest.
The plant, which began commercial operation in January 1993, is fueled with waste wood from surrounding lumber mills. With purchase of this interest, CMS Energy now owns interests in seven independent power plants producing a total of 1,554 megawatts as well as a number of other projects in various stages of development.
CMS Energy Corporation is a $3.1 billion (sales) diversified energy company with businesses engaged in the distribution of electricity and natural gas, interstate storage and transmission of natural gas, oil and gas exploration and production, independent power generation and utility services. CMS Energy Corporation's principal subsidiary is Consumers Power Company, Michigan's largest utility and the nation's fourth- largest gas and electric utility.
