CMP Natural Gas Announces Plans to Serve Power Plant.

AUGUSTA, Maine, July 8 /PRNewswire/ -- CMP Natural Gas (CMPNG) and Calpine Corporation, a San Jose, California-based independent Power Company, today announced the signing of a long-term contract for CMPNG to provide natural gas delivery service to Calpine's proposed 540-megawatt natural gas-fired power plant in Westbrook, Maine. Construction of the $200 million electric generating facility is under way. Calpine has informed CMPNG that it will require gas service by June 1, 2000.

Pending Maine Public Utilities Commission approval, CMPNG plans to serve Calpine by building a new lateral pipeline that would interconnect with the nearby interstate pipeline facilities that are jointly owned by Portland Natural Gas Transmission System and Maritimes & Northeast Pipeline. Under terms of the multi-year contract, Calpine will be responsible for arranging gas supplies and CMPNG will be responsible for delivering gas to the plant.

"CMPNG is committed to providing excellent service to Calpine's 540 MW power plant in the years ahead," said Tim D. Kelley, CMPNG's President and Chief Executive Officer. "Having Calpine as a customer will help fulfill our overall strategy of serving both large and small customers throughout Maine and is a reflection of our ability to provide timely, competitively priced services in a rapidly changing energy market."

"Calpine was very impressed with CMPNG's ability to construct the lateral facilities and provide a competitive and reliable gas delivery service to our Westbrook merchant power plant," stated Bob Alff, Calpine's Vice President, Eastern Region.

CMPNG began construction of its first local distribution system in Windham, Maine earlier this year and began serving its first customer in May.

CMPNG is a joint venture with CMP Group, Inc. (NYSE: CTP), and Energy East Corporation. CMP Group is a Maine holding company whose principle subsidiary is Central Maine Power Company. Energy East Corporation is an energy delivery, products and services company doing business in New York, Massachusetts, Maine and New Hampshire. On June 15, 1999, CMP group and Energy East announced a merger of their two companies whereby Energy East will acquire CMP Group through a stock purchase.
