A FOUR-man Clwyd team emerged victorious in one of the blue riband events at this year's all-Wales YFC field day.

Sion Eilir Roberts, Iolo Wyn Francis, Dafydd Davies and Dion Edwards collected the Elwyn Griffiths statuette at Welshpool market as team winners of the Junior Stockman of the Year competition.

In the individual rankings Sion Eilir Roberts was placed third overall, while the county claimed a runners-up spot in the jazz dancing competition.

For the host federation of Montgomeryshire, it was a day of near misses as the county claimed three second places.

Carmarthenshire led with three section wins, followed by Ceredigion with two, but consistency paid off for the Radnor Federation, which was named field day champions.

Kay Morgan, of Wales YFC, said the event offered far more than inter-county rivalry.

She said: "There is a strong element of informal learning taking place. For example, many members would not be fully aware of health and safety matters if it were not for this event."

The event was sponsored by the FUW with local business loaning stock and machinery.
