CLINTON ECONOMIC PLAN GETS MTD SUPPORT

WASHINGTON, Feb. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- The Maritime Trades Department, AFL-CIO (MTD), representing 42 national and international unions with 8-1/2 million workers, indicated its strong support for the economic recovery plan unveiled Wednesday night by President Clinton.
MTD President Michael Sacco praised the new plan, calling it "a dramatic step in the right direction, one that will benefit workers all across our nation.
"As America struggles to recover from an extended double-dip recession," Sacco said, "the highest priority must be placed on putting her people back to work. By questioning whether a recovery with high unemployment is a recovery at all, the president has signaled that he will take the steps necessary to make all of our citizens productive members of society again. With an innovative package of short-term stimulus measures, he has taken the lead in restoring dignity to the American worker."
Taken in its entirety, the Clinton plan appears to strike a reasonable balance between revenue increases and spending cuts in the effort to decrease the enormous federal budget deficit, the MTD said. More importantly, according to MTD, it brings back the concepts of fairness and equity that have for too long been absent from American fiscal policy.
"American workers, as always, are willing to contribute to their country's future, provided that their efforts are not taken for granted," Sacco said. "The MTD intends to help the Clinton administration make its economic recovery proposals a reality."
