CLIMI serves up a sweet treat.

Gabriella Cilmi, Carling Academy 2, Newcastle IMAGINE a new breed of supersinger, a cross between Avril Lavigne and Amy Winehouse.

That's what you've got with Gabriella Cilmi.

The 17-year-old is going to be huge.

You may have already heard her providing the theme tune to ITV's Echo Beach, while another of her tracks has featured on a television commercial.

Although Cilmi kept the audience waiting, with many growing impatient after two support acts, she was definitely worth it.

The intimate setting was perfect for showcasing her vocal talents as she jammed with her band.

She's sassy and soulful but, although she is a wonderful singer, she made little eye contact with the audience.

The short set, which unfortunately lasted less than an hour, included a fantastic rendition of Justin Timberlake's Cry Me a River, her top 10 single Sweet About Me and several rock-out tunes from her debut album, Lessons To Be Learned.

Cilmi was energetic and demonstrated a stunning vocal range.

The final song was another dramatic cover.

She performed Led Zeppelin's Whole Lotta Love, the track which pushed her into music, with impressive vigour.

All in all, a great night was had by everyone in the Academy 2 and I would say that there is something very sweet about Gabriella Cilmi: her voice!
