CLIFFHANGER AT CINEMA TOWER.

Byline: By Thomas Smith

A PAIR of workmen prevented a disaster yesterday on a busy city centre street.

The two maintenance men were dangling 120ft up the side of a cinema when the cradle they were in gave way.

But instead of panicking, the pair kept their cool and managed to scramble on to a nearby ledge to safety.

They then secured the steel cradle, preventing it from falling on pedestrians.

The drama happened at around 3.30pm yesterday at the giant UGC cinema in Renfield Street, Glasgow.

Traffic was brought to a standstill as nearby streets were cordoned off until the dangling platform could be properly secured.

Last night, a spokesman for Strathclyde Fire Brigade said: 'The workmen helped prevent a potentially serious accident on the street.'
