 CLEVELAND ENGINEERING SOCIETY TO HONOR
 FOUNDER OF KEITHLEY INSTRUMENTS
CLEVELAND, June 11 /PRNewswire/ -- The Cleveland Engineering Society (CES) will honor Joseph F. Keithley, the founder of Keithley Instruments, Inc., with its Leadership Award at a dinner to be held tonight at Chagrin Valley Country Club. The award recognizes Keithley's creative contributions as a pioneer in the field of electronic test and measurement. Ralph E. Stinson, CES's awards chairman, will present the Leadership Award to Keithley.
The Cleveland Engineering Society established the Leadership Award in 1987. The award was created to recognize individuals who promote the advancement of technology. Previous winners include Frederick C. Crawford, former chairman of TRW, Inc., G. Brooks Earnest, former president of Fenn College (the predecessor of Cleveland State University) and Robert M. Ginn, chairman of the Illuminating Company. Selections are made based on the recipient's contributions to the scientific and engineering professions, leadership in professional organizations, publications and patents, the encouragement of academic programs in science or engineering, and civic activities.
Keithley, 76, has a background in electronics that extends for more than 50 years. He began his career with Bell Telephone Laboratories in New York City, after earning his bachelor's and master's degrees in electrical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
He began Keithley Instruments in 1946 as a manufacturer of extremely sensitive electrical measurement instruments. Major customers are scientists, researchers and engineers who need to measure very low levels of voltage, current or resistance. An example would be a materials scientist whose research requires a measurement of current down to 50 attoamps -- .00000000000000005 amp -- or roughly watching 60 electrons passing by each second. Other products specialize in speed, capable of taking up to 1 million reads in a single second.
Keithley and his wife Nancy have endowed a chair in Technology Management at Case Western Reserve University in 1991, and in 1990 endowed a chair in electrical engineering at MIT.
Keithley has won a number of industry awards during his career, including the Navy's Distinguished Civilian Service award for research he conducted and used in designing underwater mines for the Navy during World War II, the John Fluke Sr. Memorial Award for his contributions to the industry, and International Executive of the Year from The Cleveland World Trade Association. Twelve of his company's products have received industry awards since 1962 as one of the 100 Most Significant Technical Products of the Year, from Research & Development magazine. He was recently named to the National Academy of Engineering for his "pioneering contributions to electronic test and measurement instrumentation."
Keithley Instruments, Inc. (AMEX: KEI) is a leader in the design, manufacture and marketing of electronic test and measurement instrumentation and data acquisition and analysis hardware and software. Its products and systems are found throughout the world in universities, industrial research laboratories, engineering development departments, quality control areas and on production lines.
