CLARIS SHIPS FILEMAKER PRO 2.0 FOR WINDOWS; POWERFUL, NETWORKABLE, CROSS-PLATFORM DATABASE MANAGER NOW READY FOR EAGER WINDOWS USERS
SANTA CLARA, Calif., Oct. 23 /PRNewswire/ -- Claris Corp. today announced that FileMaker Pro 2.0 for Windows is now shipping and available at authorized Claris resellers throughout the world.
There are currently over 10,000 pre-ordered units of FileMaker Pro 2.0 for Windows, according to distribution giant Ingram Micro, the largest number of pre-sales orders recorded by Claris Corp.
"FileMaker Pro 2.0 for Windows provides all the ease-of-use, power and productivity that Windows users want but have never had before in a database application," said Daniel L. Eilers, Claris president and chief executive officer. "FileMaker Pro 2.0 for Windows is the right product at the right time for the booming Windows market."
Beta testers: FileMaker Pro for Windows 'sorely needed'
"Using FileMaker Pro, I can create complex data structures that allow my clients to make reports on the fly with incredible ease, a capability that has not been availabe in any other Windows database product unitl now," said Andrew Cemelli, president of Concepts and Keystrokes, a consulting firm in Fairlawn, N.J. "Filemaker Pro's interface is superb. This is a product that has been sorely needed within the PC market."
"I estimated that about three weeks worth of coding went into the actual development of a DOS-based database application I created some time ago," said Frank J. Reda, manager, User Services, Rutgers University Computing Services; Piscataway, N.J. "With FileMaker Pro 2.0 for Windows, I sat down at my Windows machine to replicate the application and it took only three hours!"
Instant Data Management for Hundreds of Business Uses --
 Database Without Programming
FileMaker Pro 2.0 for Windows, unlike other database managers, offers users complete flexibility and versatility in setting up a database quickly -- without the assistance of high-priced database consultants.
Users work with FileMaker Pro 2.0 in four basic modes: Browse, Find, Layout and Preview. Switching between these four screens, users can easily design a database, present and format data, search for records, summarize data, print reports and print mailing labels and envelopes. At no point is it necessary to write a single line of programming language code.
To set up a database, users simply define fields from a central menu either with a mouse or using the keyboard. Fields can contain text, numbers, dates, times, sound, video, graphics, calculations or summaries. Fields can be changed at any time and can contain as many as 64,000 characters to accommodate a wide variety of practical uses: Form letters, invoices, sales reports, parts inventory, subscription and membership lists and much more. Using a mouse, users can simply drag and place fields and graphics anywhere within a layout for viewing, entering and printing information.
Data, graphics and sound may be imported into FileMaker Pro databases from a variety of widely used DOS, Windows and Macintosh applications.
Database Power for an Entire Organization
Network ready out-of-the-box, FileMaker Pro 2.0 for Windows uses Dynamic Link Libraries to support multi-user file sharing on networks running Novell Netware or AppleTalk protocols. Files may be password- protected to control viewing and editing of selected layouts and fields. In addition, FileMaker Pro's record-locking capability ensures data integrity and prevents simultaneous multi-user network conflict.
Because FileMaker Pro offers multiple layouts -- or views -- of the same database, any numer of departments within a company can create specific databases (i.e. data entry order forms, sales form letters, prospect lists and fax forms) from one central file. Using FileMaker's unique Lookup capability, users can retrieve data and graphics from other related files automatically, eliminating repetitive entry.
FileMaker Pro 2.0 for Windows also features a revolutionary new capability called ScriptMaker(TM) that makes it simple to automate routine tasks, menu operations and procedures such as printing the weekly reports and updated lists. Commands and scripts can also be attached to specified buttons that allow individual users to create complete database applications for themselves or others within the organization.
 Complete Platform Transparency
Last month, Claris began shipping FileMaker Pro 2.0 for the Macintosh, the no. 1 database manager for Macintosh. Together, FileMaker Pro 2.0 for Macintosh and Windows now set the standard for how applications should work across platforms.
Ideal for work group settings that use both Macintoshes and PCs, the two versions, which share 85 percent common code, are designed to look and work alike, enabling the greatest possible interoperability with minimal support and training. One file format is shared by the Mac and Windows versions, so databases created on a PC or Macintosh can run on either platform without modification or translation.
Claris Supports Third Party Windows Developers
The Claris Solutions Alliance, announced by Claris Corp last month, is a comprehensive new program that will provide marketing and technical support services to qualified consultants, template developers and trainers who service users of all Claris software, including both Windows and Macintosh applications. Solutions Alliance members pay an annual fee of $249 for Claris' priority technical support as well as referral services to Claris' customer base who request third party solutions and training.
New FileMaker Pro 2.0 Packaging and Aggressive Windows

The newly designed logo for FileMaker Pro 2.0 for Macintosh, depicting contemporary, boldly colored file folders in motion, also appears on FileMaker Pro 2.0 Windows packaging. Following the shipment of FileMaker Pro 2.0 for Windows, Claris will launch one of its most extensive print advertising campaigns that will appear in leading business and technical trade publications throughout the world.
