CLARIS ANNOUNCES NEW HYPERCARD PLAYER

 CLARIS ANNOUNCES NEW HYPERCARD PLAYER
SANTA CLARA, Calif., Sept. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- The HyperCard Player,

a new member of the HyperCard product line, was announced today by Claris Corp. The product lets users run, or "play," HyperCard stacks.
More than 100,000 developers use HyperCard to create custom Macintosh applications. Until now, distribution of developers' stacks has been somewhat awkward, and developers were unable to protect their stacks from being modified or even damaged. The new HyperCard Player can be distributed with developers' stacks, thereby meeting their need for a more convenient form of distribution. And the HyperCard Player offers better stack-protection, providing all the functionality required to run HyperCard stacks, while limiting the end-users' ability to author or modify stacks.
Claris and Apple Computer Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) have reached an agreement that allows Apple to bundle the HyperCard Player with Macintosh computers. The HyperCard Player is bundled with the new Apple Macintosh Performa line of computers, and will be built into all other U.S. Macintosh lines over the next few weeks.
As part of its ongoing commitment to support HyperCard developers, Claris will begin offering the HyperCard Developer's Licensing Kit.
The HyperCard Developer's Licensing Kit will provide an easy means for developers to distribute HyperCard-based applications royalty-free. The $349 kit includes a license to duplicate and distribute an unlimited number of copies of the HyperCard 2.1 Player with their products. The Licensing Kit is available to independent developers who distribute their applications commercially, and is available to corporate, government and educational developers for stack distribution within their organizations.
The Licensing Kit also includes a tool for creating stand-alone applications with HyperCard, so for the first time developers can distribute double-clickable applications with custom desktop icons. Until now, developers' stacks had to be packaged with a separate HyperCard program and Home stack to ensure that the user was equipped with the software necessary to run their application. The ability to create and distribute stand-alone applications makes version maintenance easier, and gives developers' applications a more customized look.
Developers and users benefit with The HyperCard Player
The Player gives HyperCard developers greater control over their applications, because end-users will not be able to create or modify stacks, except under script control.
Since its inception in 1987, HyperCard has evolved from an innovative user-programming tool to a serious development environment that is commonly used in corporations and educational institutions to create mission-critical applications.
"The emerging category of visual development tools, in which HyperCard has been a pioneer, promises an exciting new means of crafty custom software for corporate and education customers," said Dick Gorman, Claris vice president of marketing. "HyperCard is a strategic product, and Claris is committed to making it an even more important solution for object-oriented software development."
"The HyperCard Player is the first in a series of initiatives over the coming months designed to meet the needs of the developer community. You can expect full color in HyperCard, more robust developer support and other advances."
The HyperCard Player contains all the functionality necessary to run the most complex of HyperCard stacks. When a stack-user launches the HyperCard Player, the user level is set to three. Under level three, the user can edit text in fields, add new cards or use the HyperCard paint tools. Under script control, developers can provide access to functionality beyond level three -- such as adding a new button or creating a new stack from the current one. Version 2.1 of the HyperCard Player is compatible with stacks created by all previous versions of HyperCard.
 Price and availability
The HyperCard Developers' Licensing Kit is $349. Available Oct. 15, it can be ordered from Claris at 800-544-8554.
As before, the HyperCard 2.1 Development Kit (SRP $199) is available from authorized Claris resellers. Owners of earlier versions of HyperCard may upgrade to version 2.1 of the development kit for $99.
