CLAFFEE JOINS SHAWMUT AS HEAD OF CONNECTICUT COMMERCIAL BANKING

 HARTFORD, Conn., Feb. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Shawmut National Corporation (NYSE: SNC) today announced that it has named James R. Claffee as executive vice president and head of Connecticut Commercial Banking. Claffee joins Shawmut from Bank of America.
 Allen W. Sanborn, vice chairman of Shawmut National Corporation, the parent of Shawmut Bank, and head of the Commercial Markets Group for Shawmut National, said, "After 15 years of experience in commercial banking on the West Coast, Claffee returns to his native New England to strengthen further Shawmut's leadership position in serving small- to medium-sized commercial clients. Claffee is a strong addition to our skilled commercial lending management team in Connecticut."
 At Bank of America, Claffee was executive vice president of commercial markets for Bank of America Arizona in Phoenix. Prior to that position, Claffee spent three years with Security Pacific in San Francisco as executive vice president and manager of middle market banking in northern and central California. From 1977 to 1989, he was with Bank of America in San Francisco, holding a variety of commercial and corporate banking positions. In 1976, he received an honorable discharge from the U.S. Navy, where he achieved the rank of Lieutenant after nine years of service.
 Born in Portland, Maine, Claffee is a 1967 graduate of Tufts University with a B.S. degree in civil engineering and a 1977 graduate of San Diego State University with an M.B.A. degree in finance. He also attended the Stonier Graduate School of Banking, Northwestern University's Institute for Management and Stanford University's Liberal Arts Program.
