CITY OF PITTSBURGH TO CONSTRUCT NATURAL GAS FUELING STATION
PITTSBURGH, July 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Mayor Sophie Masloff announced today that the City of Pittsburgh will construct a natural gas fueling station on its property in the Strip District.
The station will make the clean burning fuel available to city fleet vehicles and possibly to private fleets in the area.
The natural gas component will be part of a larger, multi-fuel station project to be undertaken by the city. The integrated station will provide for the city's fleet fuel needs into the next century.
"The City of Pittsburgh has committed to CNG (compressed natural gas) as its alternative fuel of choice. CNG is safe and plentiful in the United States, and it is my belief that the environmental and economic benefits of our use of CNG will be valuable assets for years to come. This station could serve as a model for local governments throughout the nation," said Masloff.
Funding for the station will be provided by Equitable Gas, the city, the Urban Consortium Energy Task Force and possibly the Pennsylvania Energy Office. The estimated completion date for the project is Fall 1993.
In addition to financial support, Equitable Gas will provide technical expertise, training and marketing support.
The city currently operates approximately 18 natural gas vehicles and has plans to double that total by the Summer of 1993. Equitable Gas has assisted several other municipalities and local businesses which operate a total of 80 additional natural gas vehicle in the Pittsburgh area.
