CITY MACHINE & WHEEL TO RECEIVE GOVERNOR'S WORKPLACE LITERACY AWARD
AKRON, Ohio, Dec. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- City Machine & Wheel Company, Inc. of Stow, Ohio was one of six Ohio companies singled out to receive a Governor's Workplace Literacy Award in ceremonies today in Columbus. City Machine is a member of The Brenlin Group, a widely diversified Akron-based management firm that includes 17 manufacturing companies which employ more than 4,000 people in 30 locations in the United States and Mexico.
City Machine & Wheel, which has been part of Brenlin since 1976, manufactures and distributes trailer, lawn and garden, golf car and industrial wheels and tires. The company has one of four Learning Centers that The Brenlin Group set up beginning in 1988 to improve the literacy and numeracy skills of employees at various company operations. Brenlin management at that time felt that employees at their companies would be better able to use emerging technologies if they were provided with an opportunity to steadily improve their basic math and reading skills.
U.S. Secretary of Labor Lynn Martin joined Ohio Gov. George V. Voinovich to honor the Stow company and other award recipients at the Vern Riffe Center for Government and the Arts. Accepting the award for City Machine were Marilyn Young, facilitator of the company's Learning Center, and Sally Kohnz, retired manager of the Brenlin Learning Centers.
Attending the ceremonies from Brenlin were David L. Brennan, chairman of the board, and Stephen J. Tomasko, vice president of Human Resources. Nancy Brennan, president, represented Brennan Learning Services.
Attending from City Machine & Wheel were Terry O'Rourke, president; Paul Starner, vice president of operations; Frank Rutkowski, plant manager; Laura Barlow, assembler; Frank Catanese, welder; Barbara Love, assembler, and Brenda Staats, welder.
