CITROEN AX DIESEL WITH LUCAS ENGINE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM SETS NEW WORLD ECONOMY RECORD

BIRMINGHAM, England, March 4 /PRNewswire/ -- The world fuel-economy record, set by a Citroen AX Diesel in 1989 has been beaten by a new version of the Citroen AX Diesel. Both the original and the new record breaker used a Lucas engine management system to help them achieve their record performance.
This system, which controls all aspects of the car's fuel delivery to ensure optimum performance under all driving conditions, comprises a rotary-type injection pump, fuel injectors and a fuel oil filter.
The new version of the Citroen AX, which features specially developed tires and a higher final drive ratio, beat the record for standard production vehicles with a figure of 116.16 mpg. The record- breaking achievement by motoring writer Stuart Bladon was officially observed by the RAC. The result is subject to final ratification by the RAC.
Commenting, Bladon said, "I was rather doubtful whether the original record could be beaten. However, the improvements introduced by Citroen on this new version of the AX combined with the continued high performance of the Lucas engine management system enabled a significant improvement in fuel economy to be achieved."
